I frame it so that there is a stud (2x4 or 2x6) all the way around the air conditioner's wall-mount chassis, with perhaps a 1/4-inch of play. If it is a load bearing wall (most outer walls are), then you should make a header and support it with dedicated studs, which I call jackposts. For a 24-inch wide A/C unit, a 2x6 header should be fine.

Below is a link to a Web site showing the framing for a window, which is exactly the same as the framing for a through-the-wall A/C. I would frame it slightly differently but this will work fine.
