i am a legal temporary worker recently moved to the usa. i filled out the w-4 and the total amount of withholdings was 5

If you're on the payroll, you can't be an independent contractor. And as it appears that you are on an H1-B visa, you cannot be an independent contractor; you MUST be on the payroll of your employer.

If you are married, your income tax withholding with 5 exemptions will be $98.00 per month. If you're single, it will be $182.00 per month. Your FICA withholding will be $233.00.
