I asked the same question a few weeks ago and you get different answers from every entity you ask. College financial aid and FAFSA say that EFC is not an actual dollar amount, but a code that tells them what you qualify for. Then I hear people say it is an actual dollar amount and others say it isn't. To truly know you have to wait til you get your actual financial aid offer/packet from the college or colleges you applied to. We are also anxiously awaiting to see what that wondrous EFC number means.

When you submit all of your tax information from yourself and your parents, there is an EFC calculated. This is what your family supposedly could contribute to your education. Apparently your contribution did not meet what they thought you could afford. I would say, without the chance to look it over, that you may get a little help. But go back in the FAFSA and check it out - there are places that will explain that better than I can.
