I could understand why they asked but it still seems a little rude. When we celebrated my grandparent's 50th anniversary. We had a big "party" with the family and close family friends. Half of my dad's parents are more(he is one of 9) don't have a lot of money so they just came down. They were so suprised. My mom split the cost with my dad's siblings and I think that is all they got.

At my parents 50th wedding in december I got stuck with making the toast. I stole a good line from my brother in law.
"50 years ago today (insert names here) got married, and speaking on behalf of myself, my brother and sisters, we're very glad they did."
