Okay, so I've worn glasses for as long as I can remember!! I'm really tired of them. My dad says contacts are bad because they will get stuck in my eyes and I won't be able to get them out, and I'll have to go get surgery to remove them or something like that. But he doesn't have to wear glasses 24/7, so he doesn't know what it's like. Once I was playing soccer, and I got hit in the face with a ball, and the glasses broke, and they also scratched my face!! So I don't want to wear glasses anymore. Please inform me about contacts. How do they work and are they safe? Do they fall out easily? Should I just stick to wearing glasses for the rest of my life? Thanks in advance!!

You will have to talk to your optometrist about which type of contact lenses you should be wearing because your prescription will be the defining factor in the type of lens. Hard or rigid lenses can fall out more easily on impact than soft lenses, again discuss this with your optometrist.
Your poor father is woefully misinformed. Although lenses can be dislodged and move on the eye, the incidence of this is relatively small. I have never heard of anyone requiring surgery to have a dislodged lens removed. It would have to have been one major bar fight to get it stuck that badly.
For sports, contacts are always preferable. They allow a full field of view and improved perception although after wearing glasses for so long to play you will take a couple of games to improve your aim with the contacts.

Contacts are obviously safe. Optometrists sell millions of pairs of contacts every year. They work exactly like you would think. Your eye doctor's office will show you how to put them in and take them out, how to take care of them and store them overnight, and how often you should change them. They do not fall out easily unless your eyes are really dried out or the contacts are too old and need to be changed. If you don't like wearing glasses, contacts are a good starting option. Since you're trying to convince your parents on this matter, you're probably too young to get Lasik (usually they don't recommend it until you're at least 25 or so).

Okay, make sure that your eye doc talks to your dad. Contacts cannot get stuck in your eyes! Contacts are 100% safe, IF you treat them properly. (take them out every night, clean them, and use a protein remover occasionaly) If you play sports or drive contacts make you safer. When you wear glasses you cant see unless you are looking directly out your glasses, and your vision changes if you are looking at a different spot through your glasses. So if something comes at you from the side (like a soccer ball!) you likely wont see it in your perifial vision, with contacts, because they cover your eye and move with it you have the same vision as someone who does not need corrective lenses. Your vision will be superior with contacts.
If you need help to convince your dad (and if hes anything like mine was) leave the vanity side out of it. (but i'm ugly with glasses, or everyone makes fun of me) Play up the saftey issue, what if you get rear ended and your glasses fly off your face, now you're in a moving vehicle and cant see. And the cost. For the same price as glasses (usually) you can have a years supply of contacts, for most places this means that they will keep you in conatacts, if you lose one they will replace it for free ( talk to your eye doctor about this first, as it may not be the same for you as it is for me) Seriously though contacts cannot get "stuck" in your eye. If you leave them in and your eyes dry out they might be hard to get out but that would take weeks of wear and abuse and they would never use surgery to get them out. Seriously bring him with you and mention to someone that you really need help to convince your dad, and they will explain everything. Let them know early on, because you have to have another test to fit you for lenses while you are in there. Good luck!

Alright - i am 31 and I got contacts 8 months ago. I used to be scared like your dad, but mostly scared of havign soemthing IN my eye. But see contacts aren't IN your eye - they make CONTACT with your iris and pupil which is really nothing more than an empty circle inside the iris (color area) that is filled with fluid and therefore looks black. it's where the light comes in. More light the pupil constricts, less light it expands. Try it with a flashlight and a mirror.

Anyways, contacts can be risky IF you don't take them out before bed. IF you never clean them in the recommended solution. IF your hands are dirty when you put them in.

Keep them clean, wear them as prescribed, and you'll be happy with eyes and head free of cheap frames. God knows i am =).

Play the money card - hey dad, having to replace the frames every 3 months or so is more expensive than paying for contacts ---

Plus, you can always get a pair of glasses made along with the contacts. And they'll give you free pair to try out for 14 days. It may be weird to put them in at first and you'll probably feel like a tiny eyelash is in there, but put them in with plenty of solution to minimize this, which is a sign of dryness.

good luck!

Ask them to check into Lasik surgery. You don't wear any corrective items. Instead your eyeball is reshaped with computer-controlled lasers so that it doesn't need correction. Even though it costs more than a pair of glasses, over several years of not needing to buy new prescription glasses or replace broken glasses it makes up the cost difference.

If you can convince your parents that you will be resposible with your contacts & keep them clean & lubricated with the lens solution, there is really no reason why you can't wear them. Tell them you will make it a habit to care for your contacts daily, just as you do your teeth. Good Luck to you!

I think you should do the test honestly as using glasses with the inappropriate grade will most probably damage your eyesight. I dont think you should worry too much about not getting glasses as I think you will be prescribed one based on your accounts of finding it hard to focus in on books and getting headaches.

COntacts are definantly better when playing sports. Piont that out. Its more expensive surgery when you have a glass shard in your eye.

as far as i know, you should first test the contacts, coz there are some people alergic to the substance they are put in. and if you pass this test and if you take proper care of your contacts there's no reason for you not feeling fine with them.personally, i don't really agree with stuff stuck to my eyeball, but in your situation they can be helpful
