People get piercings in wierd places, why not dogs? LOL! If the hook doesn't go all the way through, what do you suggest? Also, pain relievers, sedatives, anything to make it easier on the dog?

My dog found a fishing lure and got it caught in his bottom lip. It is past the barb and I was wondering if anyone knew any tricks to get it out. Without the sarcastic remarks.

I had a dog that got a fishhook stuck thru the tip of her nose. Careless people leaving their garbage lying around, no regard for others coming behind them.

I was stuck and had to do it myself... She sat patiently in front of me, looking at me with a look on her face that said she needed me to take it out now..

I had no choice and thought back quickly to what my dad had told me as a kid. So I closed my eyes and pushed the hook the rest of the way thru the skin and when I looked, she was still watching me. The hook was thru. I clipped off the barb from the end of the hook and slid it back out thru her nose. I cleaned it with alcohol, put on some polysporin and she happily went on her way.

Sometimes we are in a situation where a vet isn't handy, so you have to use your common sense. Vet has since looked at the nose and she was perfectly fine, needed nothing more. This was 4 years ago, and the dog and her nose are doing great.

Keep a good First Aid kit with you when you are out and life can still go on with common sense..

if you can Quickly push the point through the lip (without getting bitten or causing too much pain) then cut off the barb of the hook with a cutting pliers you may have to muzzle the dog and restrain it to do this, then slip the hook out. other wise take the dog to the vet once the hook is removed pain killers or sedatives are not really necessary as it is a relatively minor wound. I wouldn't reccomend giving sedatives to dogs unless prescribed by vet

I really hope this would never happen except by accident, but the best way to remove a fish hook from any place is to cut off the end of the hook with the eye and then pull that barbless end through.

I'd strongly suggest a trip to the vet even if this all goes perfectly smooth. Infection could be a problem and if the dog pulls at all against the hook (chances are he would) there may be some tissue damage done where the hook is lodged.

If the barb is all the way through...cut the barbed part off with wire cutters and you should be able to pull it out the way it went in. Make sure to put antibiotic ointment on it a few times throughout the next few days. Take him to the vet if it starts looking infected.

This is not even something to laugh about. Fish hooks are barbed, it is not as simple as just pulling it out. Take your dog to the vet, they can give the dog local anesthetic while they clip the barb off and slip the hook out.

There is no way you would find humor in this situation if you had a friggin fish hook stuck in your lip! Poor dog.

I think it is pathetic that some people are recommending to do it a home. Because if you had a goddamn fish hook stuck in your face, you wouldnt go the hospital?

You will probably want to take the dog to the vet's to have the hook taken out. You can try taking it out by cutting the jagged end of the hook with wire cutters, then pulling it through, but you take a risk of the dog getting an infection. Your best bet is a vet who can treat him both with anesthetics and antibiotics.

You should take the dog to the vet, unless you can do it yourself. The hook will have to be pushed thru and cut the barb off then pull it back out. Good luck

f there was no way to get my dog to the vet, I would push the hook all the way through the lip, snip off the prong and back it out. Follow up with disinfectant to the wound.

You need to take the dog to the vet so they can cut off the barb and disinfect the area properly.

Take the animal to a vet, If you think it is in pain, if this happen to you , won't you go to a doctor. This would make it easier on the dog to have proper treatment.
