Usually they are expensive depending on the destination's distance and any applicable taxes that nation charges visitors. Many nations can charge up to $200 in arrival/departure taxes that are added to price of the ticket. Also the cost of fuel can contribute to an expensive ticket. A flight from New York to Australia is over 21 hours and therefore it is a lengthy flight. The flight itself will consume a great deal of fuel, so the price of the fuel is divided among passengers and then calculated to give you the rate the airline will charge you.

Most of the answers have good information. A number of things need to be considered on international travel too. On a long haul flight in excess of 8 hours there is a requirement for extra crew to be on board. Since pilots are not cheap, let alone free that adds to the cost.

Aviation fuel costs are increasing and landing fees are going up too. Also, international departure taxes are increasing and while most countries build that into the cost fo your ticket, some still collect cash before you can leave.

The airlines also have to house and feed the crews while on layover in an international location. If the airline does not have its own mechanics and other personel in specific locations, contract labor needs to be hired to help take care of business.

All these things add to the cost fo your ticket. While travel is still quite affordable, it isn't going to get cheaper in the future.

A really great online travel website to find deals is:

"Amazing Tours and Travel"

You can save and book on flights, hotels, cars, cruises, golf, vacations and much more.

My family and friends use it all time for their travel needs.

It is also best to fly when it is not tourist season or the holidays. It is good to book far in advance as much as possible.

Good luck with your travels and have a great day.

Because flying internationally is expensive.

Cost of fuel is the latest increase, but there's taxes, customs, security, etc.
