I myself find that disturbing but, I know that there were three bottles of liquor in a friends Casket during the wake before being lowered into the ground.

What are appropriate items and not appropriate items to place in a casket before burial?

Along with those bottles, was there also a long pink thing with buttons on it?

Appropriate? There was a time when nothing was to be put in a casket. There was a time when your wife was put in the tomb with you, alive, along with pets, gold, and diamonds.
Whatever the deceased enjoyed and his family and friends want to add is appropriate. Including liqueur, chocolate, a class ring, a pair of Jimmi Choos! There should be no casket police at a home going. You are there to celebrate that persons life, not write a critique for the Sunday section of the local news.
Be Blessed

An endless list could be prepared for what is appropriate and what is not appropriate. However, unusual placing liquor in the casket may seem, if the deceased was known to love their booze, then I see no harm.

In ancient times it was quite common to include some sort of food or drink as an offering to help guide the deceased into the "next life".

Well I think thats tacky--but if it was placed there by a very close family member--the mom, dad, brother or sister--then thats their choice and we have to respect that. But no one else should have been allowed to place 3 bottles of liquor in the casket--like a friend, cousin, co-worker--whomever, because it is disrepectful to the person who died. Only the close family members knew the deceased person well enough to know if that was acceptable.

Although nothing will physically go to the person's eternity with them,
Many people place treasured items in the casket for burial.
I don't agree with the booze placed there either.
That just sounds sad.

Why should it matter what you put in a casket? As long as it's not alive, I'd say you could put whatever the heck you want. It's going to get buried anyway. Right?

I guess it depends on the person really....

*for my little cousin, we had a stuffed animal, and pictures of her mom,dad and her doggy(whom she never got to see)*.

If the person loved to drink, maybe a bottle of alcohol isn't that bad of a thing. if they loved to read,a book wouldn't be that bad of thing. But for alot of the ones i see, its usually a rosary.

It is MY OPINION that people have become totally disrespectful of such a solemn occasion. I lay this blame to the deceased's family who initiate it and the funeral parlors that tolerate it. In no way is it having respect for the dead.

Appropriate items for a funeral/wake are still the traditional flowers and cards.

And who is to be in charge of what is "appropriate"? The appropriate police? Lighten up.
