Shi'as are the minority (10-15%,) and they are portrayed in the media as violent terrorists.

They are not!
Saddam Hussein was a Sunni!
Bin Laden is a Sunni!
So are most of the terrorists that either were arrested or shot down!
Shiats are known to be the more peaceful.
We don't blow ourselves up!
The Sunnis are the one doing the "kaboom"!!!
The last suicide bomb was just about a week ago in Iraq by the Sunnis aimed at the Shiats!!!
Why?! The Shiats were visiting Karbala for Imam Hussain's (the 3rd Imam) 40th. 40th is basically the 40th day after his brutal killing by the SUNNIS!!!
I would narrow it down for you a bit.
In Sauid Arabia a girl's school caught on fire! They let them all to burn to death because they might have not had their Hijab on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EDIT:
To the one before me:
No we don't cut our children's heads open with razors! Let alone cutting them on a HOLIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!
We don't whip ourselves!!!!!!!!!! I know you're talking about Ashoora Tasooa, but get your story straight. Don't talk when you don't know!
AND OH MY GOD!!! OH MY GOD!!! LETTING A STRANGER TO HAVE SEX WITH NEWLY WED WIVES?!!!
Definetly your husband is a big fat liar!
And I ask you this?! What about Wahabis?! They are the most fanatic of the Sunni groups!
I can mention numerous times when I was in Makka and was beaten up by a Wahabi!!! AND I WAS A KID!!!

Praise be to Allah.
I just wanted to comment on the word "more so than". Sunna is to follow the prophet's (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) way of life, who is the most person practised Islam. and simply sunnis are not terrorists because muslims are not terrorists and Islam is against terrosrim.

Ultimately it's because America isn't over the whole Islamic revolution in Iran and Iran isn't over it enough to just move past the fact that the rest of the world accepts the existence of Israel and has more important issues to worry about (like getting Palestine to be a responsible member of the world community). And just like America vs Cuba, both sides have enough money to keep the feud going for a long, long time.

For the same reason Hari Krishnas and others are portrayed as nuts in the media. They're outsiders from the status quo and the social norm. They're seen as fanatical because they aren't like us.

Shiites have more radical beliefs than Sunnis, and also, Shiites are less common than Sunnis seeing as how Sunnis make up about 90% of the Muslim population

Shias cut their children's heads open with razors on their holiday. They whip themselves in the public streets. They let their Imams have sex with their newly wed wives before they have sex with them. Yes these are facts. My husband and I are Muslims and he was explaining to me how Shias behave. So yes they are more fanatic than Sunni. But in reality they shouldn't be any sects in Islam because Prophet Muhammad(PBUH*) told his followers NOT to divide themselves into sects after he died. He didn't want the Muslims to be divided like the Christians and Jews. My husband and I are just Muslims. We're not into either sect.
