This is a tough question. There are literally hundreds of sleep prescriptions/aids on the market. So, what do you do? There are some very good prescriptions out there, but unfortunately they are addictive, and they do have side effects.
There are a few things I would try before I went with a prescription of any kind. Try taking two aspirin (if this of course is ok with your doctor). This can thin the blood, and thereby make you a bit sleepy. You could combine that with some chamomile tea perhaps, with some milk. Turkey also has tryptophan which will make you more likely to sleep.
lol....Have 2 aspirin (if this of course is ok with your doctor) , a turkey sandwich, and some milk and chamomile tea. And there you go. I am not kidding.
Often, GNC or your local nutrition store will have some ideas about natural sleep aids.
If this doesn't work, take the two aspirin (if this of course is ok with your doctor) and try daydreaming. Psychiatrists say that daydreaming is really healthy for us. If you don't daydream, START!!! Dream that you have won the lotto and what you'd do with the money. Dream something else you'd really enjoy....may be that you've won an all expense paid trip to...wherever.......and what you'd do, who you'd take....
This will work. It's got to. lolol.
This might be unorthodoxed, and you would need to discuss it in depth with the doctor, but if you are also an anxious person during the day as well as night I might suggest a drug called Seroquel. A very small amount of this antipsychotic agent with put a person to sleep with very few side effects. It isn't really addictive, and it won't be too much for you if it is in a very small amount. Don't take high amounts of this drug. Like over 200 mg.
I really hope this helps!

google "sleep hygeine"
here are my sleep tips:
go to bed and get up at the same time every day ,even weekends.
do only boring things that last hour before bed. no exercise, no computer time. Avoid bright lights.
Make sure your bedroom is totally dark, including covering up that digital clock and shutting the drapes/blinds/shades.
exercising during the day will tire you out so you sleep well later.
avoid caffeine like the plague. a morning cup of coffee is ok, but nothing after 1 PM or so. some meds like cold remedies can ramp you up, too, look for the "agitation in children" label-some adults get trouble too
use a meditation tape, or guided imagery. Try a noise generator or CD of ocean waves to sleep if you live in the rackety city. Very relaxing music is good, too.
don't use your bedroom for anything but sleep (or sex, if you are an adult). No computer, no TV, no reading in bed.
If these things don't work after a month or so, you may have depression interfering with your sleep, and you should screen yourself for that. there are online depression screening tests. Or there could be something else wrong. don't take ambien, lunesta, etc. they are addictive and only work a week or so, then you're hooked and they aren't really helping anymore. (but you will get rebound insomnia if you quit). There is plenty of research to support this, when I looked into it.
Good luck! google this topic and you will find some things I'm sure I forgot.

I wouldn't recommend medication. You can become dependent on them to sleep. Instead, set your sleep area up so that it feels relaxed and comfortable for you. Set up a television or turn off all things that create sound depending on how well you fall asleep in noisy environments. Darker rooms make is easier to fall asleep because there's little to look at. If your mind tends to wander a lot before you sleep and it keeps you awake, think about a movie or a book and try to play it inside you head. It helps me...

Napqueen stated melatonin, it extremely is the pigment present day in human dermis. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter, it really is a organic substance, and certain, it ought to help you sleep. what it definitely does is help "reset" your inner clock, permitting you to sleep more advantageous powerful. i don't be conscious of if it really is something that you should take, due on your beliefs. I used to have a similar difficulty - all of my life, in truth, till i began operating a job from 3pm to 11pm. After artwork, i'd flow out & dangle out, and oftentimes doesn't flow to mattress till 8am or so. the point is, i replaced into extremely drained when I went to mattress, so I had no hassle falling & then staying asleep. i don't be conscious of once you've the luxurious of rearranging your agenda, yet attempting to achieve a state of actual exhaustion formerly attempting to sleep ought to artwork. also, strengthen a "mattress time recurring" and stick with it.

I have a similar problem. I suggest not thinking too much before you go to bed. If you don't think about things, you'll have a better chance of falling asleep. Also, as a snack before you go to bed, instead of cookies or something with caffeine, have a fruit. It'll relax your nervous system which will allow you to sleep more soundly.

If you can't sleep because you've got things on your mind, see about finding someone to talk to about them.
I also found chamomille tea helps a lot. Celestial Seasonings recently came out with a sleepytime extra tea that has Valarian in as well as chamomille, and that works wonders.

ask a doctor there are plenty of medications. i take trileptol. it's not for sleep but it does the job. counting sheep and showering and all that nonsense is a big waste of time. just ask about side effects. the medication depends on the individual so i can't make a suggestion. plus i'm not a doctor. just a patient. good luck.

There are over the counter sleep aids such as valerian that help with sleep. However if your insomnia is of enough severity you can have your doctor perscribe seditives.
