Dissociation is not a form of self-injury and is a psychological defense against situations which are often emotionally overwhelming. It also occurs in hypnotic or trance like states and is something commonly experienced by most people at some point, as in "highway hypnosis" which is actually dissociation. It is actually a skill that can be learned too, as is the case when people are taught self-hypnosis for pain management.
In the clinical sense, as a defense mechanism, dissociation is unconscious and functions to wall off or partition memories into discrete "chunks" that are separated from your conscious awareness. It can be partial (as in cases where the emotional content is split off from the actual experience-think of the trauma survivor who can recount every detail of a horrific experience but does so without any emotion) or extremely complete (as in cases of dissociative identity disorder-multiple personality-where entire memories, emotions and behaviors are completely split off from one another and exist separately within a person's psyche, functioning as alter parts of the person where each is often unaware of the existence of another part). Dissociation helps initially as a survival strategy by isolating emotions or memories from conscious awareness. A very common example is the amnesia experienced by trauma survivors for all or part of a traumatic event or when you talk to a sex abuse survivor who explains that they do not remember details of the abuse because they "took themselves away in their mind" or saw the abuse as if it were actually happening to someone else. Often times. especially with children who are more prone to dissociate than adults, dissociation is the only method available to escape horrific experiences.

Dissociation (lat. dissocio, to separate, to distinguish) has different meanings in different sciences.
In chemistry: see Dissociation (chemistry)
In psychology: see Dissociation (psychology)
In neuropsychology: see Dissociation (neuropsychology)
In neuropsychology, dissociation involves identifying the neural substrate of a particular brain function through identification of case series, neuroimaging, or neuropsychological testing.
One method is "double dissociation". In a series of patients with traumatic brain injury, one might find two patients, A and B. Patient A has difficulty performing cognitive tests for, say auditory memory but has no problem with visual memory. Patient B has the opposite problem. By using neuroimaging (or neuropathology post mortem) to identify the overlap and dissociation between lesioned areas of the brain, one can infer something about the localization of function in the normal brain.
Dr. Oliver Sacks has described many famous cases in his books. There are patients who cannot name an object when they can only see it, but can when they use other senses like touching or smelling. Patient D.F. was unable to place a card in a slot, but could do so when told to place it "as if mailing a letter". From this the conclusion was drawn that judging orientation is one ability (which D.F. had lost) and visual control of an action another (which D.F. could still do) [1].
To make the difference between single and double dissociations easier to understand, Parkin [2] gives the following example:
If your TV set suddenly loses the color you can conclude that picture transmission and color information must be separate processes (single dissociation: they cannot be independent because you cannot lose the picture and still have the color). If on the other hand you have two TV sets, one without sound and one without a picture you can conclude that these must be two independent functions (double dissociation).

Dissociation is when you feel as if your mind is disconnected from your body and senses. Many people describe feeling as if they are outside of their bodies, watching whatever is going on as if they were an observer, rather than someone who is involved. Dissociation often begins as a defense mechanism in psychologically traumatic situations, allowing the subject to emotionally withdraw from the event. While this is a helpful defense mechanism in extremely stressful situations, repeated dissociation can lead to mental illness. Some people who have been through extremely stressful events tend to dissociate at inappropriate times, and this can sometimes lead to irrational or uncontrolled behavior.

hi dissociation has a different meaning depending which science
Dissociation in chemistry and biochemistry is a general process in which complexes, molecules, or salts separate or split into smaller molecules, ions, or radicals, usually in a reversible manner. Dissociation is the opposite of association and recombination
Dissociation is a psychological state or condition in which certain thoughts, emotions, sensations, or memories are separated from the rest of the psyche. For this reason, it is sometimes referred to as "splitting."
In neuropsychology, dissociation involves identifying the neural substrate of a particular brain function through identification of case series, neuroimaging, or neuropsychological testing Theres more on the link hope that helps x

I am not really sure how to explain it. It is not a form of self-injury although sometimes some people do self-injure while in a dissociative state. For me it is like being outside of myself watching my body function but feeling completely separated from it. It is like your mind and soul are a separate entity from your body.
