If you are going to many of these birthday parties for 5 year old children, my advice to you is spend as little as possible. They aren't your children, and they aren't going to thank you. The absolute MOST that you should spend on someone of this age, who isn't related to you is $10 TOPS. The best thing that you could do is, if you have any unopened gifts that were given to you or your son that you didn't like, then re-gift them for parties, as long as they are child-appropriate. For example Ive got art sets, stuffed animals, and other various things that I didn't want. Just stick a bow on them and you've got your gift. Just remember, $20 is too much to spend on some bratty little five year old kid who you don't even know.

I don't think the price matters. When my son was 2 I gave him a $40 dollar Leap Pad, his mother gave him a $250 dollar gift, and he instantly forgot that her gift existed. Last Christmashe was seven and I gave him a used Playstation that I got for $20, and it's his favorite thing in the world. The price doesn't matter. What matters is whether the child enjoys the gift, and whether it can teach the child something. A child will enjoy a $5 interactive game or a $2 book more than a $100 display piece, but will enjoy a $600 PS3 more than a $5 action figure. Price isn't the issue. What will make the boy happy is the important factor.

It really depends of the persons budget. When I have a tight budget, I spend less...when I have a little extra, I spend more. If you can only spend a little, the trick is to find something GREAT...but on sale or even clearance. And I don't mean some random thing that the person it's intended for won't like I went to a wedding a few years back, and on the registry was a down throw, (registered @ an upscale store). I did a bit of hunting and found the exact down throw (same brand/color) at another store on sale for 30% off. So I bought that....I guess the point is I spent what my budget would allow, and still got a nice present. There's a lot to be said about smart shopping!

I usually spend between $10 and $15 on a gift, unless the kid is a close friend with my daughter or if we are close with the family, then I'll go up to $20 or $25. I try to get creative and put together several items, like art and craft type things. Kids get so many gifts at parties that it's not necessary for each person to spend a lot. In fact I prefer that my daughter not get expensive gifts at her parties.

It depends on various factor, like how much you can afford and your relationship with the Family who are hosting B_day. If the host is your Family member or your Boss, then you have to spend more than 25.00. Other wise 10.00 - 15.00 is OK. Ultimately, no body will invite you just for the sake of gifts you give.

I spend between $15 and $20, but every once and awhile I'll find something cool on sale for around $10...but rarely... I figure the parents spend so much on the parties a decent gift is the least I can do.

Depends on how much you AND they make. Seriously. If $25 is not big deal for you or them to spend on your son feel free.
However my son just got given a little tykes basketball net (which I just looked up and is only $40 with tax not as bad as I thought). And another friend got us duplo and three books. The books were $10 each and duplo about $20. It's nice and we appreciate it but it also makes us a little uncomfortable because we can't really afford to spend more than $20 on gifts for their kids and we haven't known these people that long.
You know? So even though they are probably fine spending that amount, and maybe they did it because they know we are having trouble, but it is something to consider.

For most parties that I am invited to, I spend between 15 and 20 dollars. For myown child, it just depends on what I want to buy for him... It might be a hundred dollars or more or whatever. But for the usual birthday party that I am invited to... I say $15-$20 at the most.

Well, I'd say $10-15 would be fine. I recently got a friend's 10 year old son a $15 I-pod card.
