your neighbors would think you're a weirdo. You'd also look cheap, too.

Wow!!! I never think it could happen in 2007-really!!! I did have some people came to my house to visit and steal stuff from my house before, but not borrow toothpaste, body wash, or personal stuff. I hope I never have to get to that point to be that lazy and that poor to have to borrow anything like that. Because I am a shopper, my house is stock up-ways too stock up. Every time I went to town (usually when I go in for my classes) I will cruising around the store to see what is on sale or clearances. I have two rooms in my house full of the stocks like a store. I find that presents for me, and something to do like a Hobie, and feel good that I never run out of anything I need in my living. It would be sad if I have to borrow any personal stuff from someone. Sad, very sad in the US., if it ever happen to anyone.

I've shared toothpaste with friends often enough on the road, when someone had forgotten to take it along. Never thought anything about it, you just put some on your toothbrush, you don't dip the toothbrush in the tube or put the tube in your mouth do you? Same with shampoo or shower gel or anything that you just squeeze out of the bottle or tube, or spray type stuff like spray deo, hairspray, etc. Only when you rub it onto your body do I think it's a personal item not to be shared; toothbrush is the most obvious but also deo sticks/rollers, bars of soap (handsoap is kinda okay but not when used for the shower) etc.

Depends on the people you live next too. If you know them really well and you don't think that they would mind or they ask you to borrow your toothpaste and body wash then why not? If they have a problem with it then don't ask anymore.

I don't think that it would be proper. Things like toothpaste and body wash are personal items. Although it's not to the same extent, it falls under borrowing someone else's toothbrush or razor.

It is irresponsible of people to borrow items of such a personal nature, such as, body wash and toothpaste from their neighbor or anyone else for that matter. These items can be purchased inexpensively from the multitude of dollar stores that are in existence today.
If it is someone who has traveled to your home and has negligently forgotten theirs, then I would suggest that you offer to take them to the store, whereby, they may purchase their own.

I feel politeness has NOTHING to do with it.
Good neighbors will always borrow what they can and help where they are needed. Thats what being neighborly is all about.
If, however a certain neighbor never returns things then it is up to YOU to tell them NO next time and from now on.
