There is somewhat of a conspiracy theory in regards to no calorie sweeteners. Some people say the health risks outweigh the benefits. Others argue it’s perfectly fine, but it just doesn’t taste as good. Are they the ultimate solution to sugar, or are we to avoid them at all costs?

Yes they are harmfull and unhealthy. Some artificial sweeteners are proved to be carcinogenic in high doses.+ their bad effects on the kidneys(also on high doses)(note that people really tend to drink pepsi light and cola light in high quantaties,..especially if they r on diet).

It is important to mention that all these artificial edibles have kind of acumulative nature..that means if u drink them even in low doses per day..but drink them for years and years...the bad effects just accumalates in ur body...and will eventually float one day(as cancer for example).

Artificial sweeteners should be taken mainly by diabetic patients.(true need).

Let's answer that by parts:

1) ALL artificial sweeteners based on Aspartame have been pr oven to be carcinogenic and also, if exposed to heat (as many sodas are during transportation) can degrade into chemicals harmful to our brain (that is a fact).

2) The sweetener called Splenda, is not Aspartame based and also tastes a lot like sugar. However, it is recent but so far there has been no negative reports about it.

3) Sweeteners based on Xylitol (an alcohol molecule that is similar enough to sugar that it fulls our taste buds but does not full our digestion, so it does not get digested) taste identical to sugar and, so far have not shown any side effects to my knowledge.

As a rule, it is better to stay away from them if you can, but if you can't, it is best to use Xylitol, the most natural one.
You can even buy chocolate that is sweetened only with Xylitol (both Hershey's and Russel Stove make them).

Hope this helps.

Sweeteners are bad for teeth and for diabetics etc. If you see people in remote places you see they have perfect teeth. That's because of a sugar free diet. But since it is available in nature, it can't be all bad. Just has to be taken moderately.

Common sense tells you that if your ingesting anything artificial, its bad for you. The theory you talk about is that the artificial sweetners leach the calcium out of your bones. I can't confirm or deny this, but I avoid them in case it is true.
