Hey folks, Bordetella is not a virus, it is a bacteria. If a dog gets it's yearly shots , then Bordetella is most likely the culprit. Since the viral causes of 'kennel cough' (Parainfluenza, Coronavirus, Adenovirus type 2, and canine distemper) are all covered by the standard DHLPP vaccine, the basic vaccine for dogs, and Bordetella is usually left as an optional vaccine and many turn it down because they actually trust a grooming establishment or other places dogs frequent to be clean (silly idea). If you neglected to get your dog vaccinated, your dog will have a chance of getting pneumonia. If it isn't improving after a week of onset, you need to go to the vet. It is self-limiting when it is just Bordetella, but if it is one of the other viruses, and there has been no improvment,go get your dog a chest x-ray. Verminkiller, your lack of knowledge has just been proven...

Kennel cough is a self limiting illness. It will usually go away on it's own in a healthy dog within 3-4 weeks. You will want to make sure to get it properly diagnosed by a vet as there are other illnesses that mimic kennel cough. These illnesses need antibiotics. Antibiotics don't work for "real" kennel cough because KC is a virus and antibiotics don't work on virus. Your vet may also want to give you a cough med since the cough can be very annoying for your dog as well as you.

You need to get your dog to the vets. Kennel cough is an upper respiratory infection and must be treated with antibiotics.
I know of NO home remedies for this infection.
Make and appointment to bring your dog into the vets. Don't wait it will only get worse.

Kennel Cough is a virus. It has to run its course, however, some vets may cover your pet with an antibiotic, depending on age and severity, to prevent it from turning into pneumonia. If your pet has an active lifestyle RE: grooming, puppy daycare etc. you should have him/her vaccinated. As far as their surroundings everything, walls, doorknobs, surfaces should be cleaned with an anti viral. Good Luck.
