Here are some practicing techniques that will help you develop strength and speed in your left hand:

1. Practice chord progressions. If you are having trouble getting chords down quickly enough, try practicing switching between two chords, then three, then four, etc. Don't go on to playing three (or more) chords until you can easily switch between two.

2. If you are having trouble moving to different positions on the neck of the guitar, try this: start in the first position then look at the position you are moving to-switch! Then look at the 1st position again, and switch back. Then go to the second position, and repeat.

3. Stretch your fingers before you play. I always go through a routine of cracking each nuckle, bending the finger down gently as I do. Then I spread my fingers as wide as I can, and then smush them into a tight fist, and repeat until my hand feels looser and more relaxed. Also make sure that your hands are not cold, this can seriously hurt your playing- cold hands are stiff hands, and a cold guitar is an out-of-tune guitar.

4. Practice difficult parts slowly first, then go faster. I reccomend using a metronome for this. Set it to a fairly slow pace, making sure you can play every note, and not feel rushed or panicky. Then make it a tiny bit faster. Then just a smidgen faster. And a little faster. And faster. But before you set the metronome to a higher speed, always make sure you are comfortable at the current speed.

5. Just keep practicing- you'll get better!

Good luck, I hope this helps! :-)

The names 'guitar', Gk. kithara and Pers. sihtar
originated from Hindi 'Sitar', Telugu and
Sanskrit 'Chitra Veena' (stringed musical instrument).
