not really
i think it would be quite boring
plus there are some fabulous sayings in french, Spanish and Italian that just dont communicate the same thing in another language
having one language would mean loosing some really rich tools for communication

Sure, it would be more convienient, but it would probably have more adverse effects than good: cultures would be destroyed (a langauges is a huge chunk of someone's culture); jobs would be lost (there are many people who earn money through translation, interpreting, teaching, studying); human curiosity would be curved (if you can understand them, there's no will to further understand them). I'm sure there are many more.
And for all those people who said English is already getting there, you're ignorant. English is definately not the most widely spoken langauge, Mandarin Chinese is. Does that mean we should all learn Mandarin since it already has a lead on other algnauges? No. What makes you think your culture is so much better than everyone else's that they would have to drop their own and pick up your's?
I'm sure a constructed langauge would be 'O.K' for a mandatory second langauge (so that people could keep their native tongue), but that poses more problems itself. It first has to have no cultural ties (Esperatno, for example, I think, is too westernized). Additionally, having it as a second langauge would call for influence from the native langauges. This would probably make just as many dialects as there are langauges.
Culture is the world's flavor. Without it, we're just a bland piece of dry meat.

With the interconnection of humanity as it stands today, we are well on our way towards that goal. For the very reasons that the people preceding me have mentioned, it wouldn't happen any time soon. However as time goes by and the languages slowly merge, we will arrive at a point in time when they do merge (measured in centuries) and nobody will feel any different for it, since they would have grown up in this world of inter-communication and interaction.
The previous answers have mentioned a loss of culture and diversity. Although that diversity will shrink, it won't completely disappear, (IDIC - infinite diversity in infinite combinations) and we will have never known its loss, for we will have never known it at all. To us, life will be as it should be, and we will wounder how in the world our ancestors ever got along at all!

It would be nice but it'd be boring. With no new languages to learn and nothing exciting to look forward to when visiting a different country, what are we to do?
I just really like learning new languages and I think languages make everything unique :)

If you are talking about an auxiliary language we could use and KEEP our mother tongues, yes, it'd be great. But here, it is important to stress something. Each of our languages is a different view of the world. and at the same time, global communication would be easier if we could share a language.

Yes and I think we all should wear the same clothes and think alike, talk alike and have a extremest right wing intolerance xenophobic faccist government that will punish us for doing something different.
I am pro diversity, every person is unique and languages are part of our different backgrounds.
so....hell no!

That would be so boring. I love learning new languages because it help you get a better understanding of people of different culture and backgrounds. Also there are lots of words in many different language that have no direct translation outside that language.

How nice would you consider it if all people were thinking the same way? It is like eliminating curiosity and difference which is an important term in our relations.
