Steaming is the best way to treat asparagus; otherwise you can put the spears in a skillet with a bit of water. Bring the water to the boil then remove from the heat. Cover with a lid and let the asparagus set for 2 minutes. Test the tenderness with the tip of a knife. There should be some resistence. Don't let the water turn color. Strain well and season with salt and butter.

first of all, clean up the asparagus. cut off about 2 inches at the bottom and rinse.
well there are many techniques: BLANCHING, SAUTING, ROASTING, andSTEAMING.
blanching is the quickest: boil some water add in asparagus for ONLY 1-2 minutes and shock in ice water. this will keep the vibrant green color!!!
sauting- add some olive oil to a skillet and put in asparagus. season with salt and pepper. cook until tender, and put on a serving dish.
roasting is very simple too. just preheat oven to 350degrees and put asparagus on a cookie sheet. add olive oil, salt, and pepper and toss the asparagus around. put in oven and cook for about 20-25 minutes.
steaming: put on a double boiler and let asparagus cook just until tender.
good luck!!! enjoy! =]

Generally, a pound of asparagus has 12 to 15 spears and serves 2 to 4 people. Trim about 1 inch from the butt ends, and cook asparagus until barely fork tender (tender crisp). Do not overcook; asparagus will absorb water and break down.
Cooking options:
Blanch or boil: In a frying pan large enough to hold asparagus in one layer, bring about 3 inches of water to a boil. Stir in 1 tablespoon salt. Add asparagus. Cook at a medium boil until fork tender, 2 to 5 minutes, depending on thickness. Drain on paper towel; cool.
Steam: Place whole trimmed asparagus on a steamer rack in a large saucepan over (not in) boiling water. Cover and steam for 4 to 8 minutes.
Microwave: Arrange whole trimmed asparagus in a glass baking dish with tips overlapping in center. Add 2 to 4 tablespoons water. Cover dish with plastic wrap, turning back one corner to vent steam. Microwave at HIGH power for 3 to 6 minutes, then let stand 3 to 5 minutes more.
Stir-fry: Cut asparagus spears at an angle into 1-inch lengths. Stir-fry in hot oil or butter, stirring constantly for 3 to 7 minutes.
Grilling: Brush spears with olive oil and place directly on the grill. Cook, turning several times, for 3 to 6 minutes.

You can steam it, or what i do is drizzle some olive oil on a baking sheet put the asparagus on it and roll it around to get some of the olive oil on the asparagus, then i bake it in the oven at about 400 until it begins to wilt, when it is almost done i sprinkle parmesan cheese on it.

Boil it: if it's very fresh it will break at the correct place (for trimming), then wash and drop into boiling water for about five min. Careful, this first groth in the spring is kind of a cathartic.

Steamed is the best way to go because it has more vitamins and more nutrients in the vegetable itself.
