The Thermos doesn't need to know,it only carries out the function it has been designed to carry out, that is insulation of it's contents, be it hot or cold, from the enviornment,it is in fact a double walled bottle with a vacumn between these walls.,after the vacumn has been created, the two walls are sealed together at the neck, the inner surface has a reflective surface which prevents further change in temperature by radiation.Thermos was first manufactured in 1904 by a German company which used ' Thermos ' as their trademark.

Thermos bottle knows nothing........It actually breaks the flow of heat between the liquid inside the bottle and atmosphere. Heat flows from hotter place to colder place, since in this case, the flow of heat is almost stopped, thats why hotter things remain hot and colder things remain cold till long time.

There are some humourous and excellent answers to this question. Simply put - it slows the substance from losing it's temperature - hot or cold.

it doesn't, it all depends on the initial state in which you put the internal environment, then all it does is prevent the passage of heat.
i believe it uses a vacuum as heat can only radiate through.

It was recently discovered that insulating materials such as that used in thermoses actually have real intelligence.
