I have a gum boil on a tooth that I had a root canal on last year. Must it be pulled? A lot of pus is coming from it. Is it painful having it pulled if need be?

Sometimes new trauma, deep decay or a loose, cracked or broken filling can cause new infection in your tooth.
It sounds like you have a fistula and that will never heal on it's own.The fistula is the result of an abscessed tooth and a failed root canal. The abscess is an infection that first forms around the apex or tip of the root. If left untreated the infection will begin to erode the bone around the tooth. You are most likely going to need root canal surgery called a apicoectomy if you want to save this tooth. The dentist will open the gum tissue near the tooth to see the underlying bone and remove any inflamed or infected tissue. The very end of the root is also removed.A small filling may be placed to seal the end of the root canal and a few stitches are placed in the gum to help the tissue heal.He will also remove the fistula at the end of the surgery.

The only alternative to surgery is extraction of the tooth. The extracted tooth must be replaced with a implant, bridge or removable partial denture to restore chewing function and to prevent adjacent teeth from shifting.Nothing is as good as a natural tooth.

If the tooth had a canal or entire root section that was block, partial blocked, undetected for whatever reason, the root canal can be be reworked. If --- the reason for the failed root canal is a crack that also can not be detected , you are spiinning your wheels. It is sometimes very difficultto know which was which until the tooth is pulled . If it is an anterior tooth, I would try to get it reworked. Always a chance the crown will fracture. ( cost- between the redo and crown- 2,000 to 3,000 if you need a new crown and build up.) To extract the tooth- 100 to 200 . to replace the extracted tooth- 2700 to three grand. It all comes out to about the same. You need to check your insurance , does it cover the rework of the root canal? Wil cover the crown again since it has onlt been a year if it breaks? Do they cover the bridge, at what amount( not percent) is there a waiting period on your policy.
If they cover 50% and your dentist is a provider, you still only have so much coverage which may be all gone by the time they do the root canal. You need to call and get the codes fees from dentist- then ask you insurance - if i have this code at this fee what will my portion be after you pay in dollars? Lots of times they say 50% . But they only pay 50% of 10 and he charges you 100 you owe 95.

This is what the dental hygienist suggested for bleeding gums: Brush for 4 minutes, twice a day. Use an electric toothbrush, they are better for cleaning. Brush teeth up and down concentrating on each tooth, also brushing the gumline, gums and then brush the tongue. Using small interdental brushes (eg. TePe, buy these at the supermarket), dip into mouthwash and brush inbetween the gaps in the teeth, redipping the little brush in the mouthwash. There are different size brushes for different sized gaps. Finally, use mouth wash. This should remove bacteria and plaque from all sufaces. You might not see much difference for a few weeks but you will notice that the gums will become less bright red and inflamed. I used to be afraid of going to dentist as I had to have gas anaesthetic to have a tooth out. When the gas mask was put on, it felt like I was suffocating and about to die. Many years later, I found a really good dentist and have been going regularly since then. That is the secret, ask friends/family for recommendations for a dentist. Explain your fears and I am sure he/she will be sympathetic. You should get checked out at least once as bleeding gums is a sign of gum disease.

You need to see your dentist immediately. It's possible that the infection can be treated without having to pull the tooth. It all depends on the severity of the infection. It does sound like a very severe infection and needs medical attention.
