I was raised a Baptist Christian. However as an adult, I only feel obligated to go to church. The church I belong to has a lively service, so it's not like it's boring or anything. I do feel good when I leave service, but I usually feel like I've already heard every theme discussed in the sermons. I have been a member of other churches as an adult, and this feeling is not unique to this church.

I feel obligated to go to church, so I don't go. I feel like you shouldn't go to church if you are only going out of obligation.

At the same time, I feel bad because I feel like I SHOULD be going to church. I even will tell others that I am going to church the next morning, but when morning comes, I don't feel like going, and then I feel bad when I don't go. But I only feel bad out of guilt.

No, you shouldn't feel bad because it shows that you want to do the right thing. Going to church does not make you a good person, it's how you behave in general. Going to church is voluntary, if you don't go you shouldn't feel guilty about it.

Many a person has kept the practice, because they didn't know they could do otherwise. That is the old obligatory feeling, but you don't have to be one of them. Remember, every sermon and theme at church is well-steeped in guilt and obligation. If you don't like those feelings now, you probably never will. Your friends and family should still love you and think the same of you, whatever you choose, and if they don't, then they were never really supportive of you in the first place. You shouldn't have to go to church to feel like you're a good person, and you shouldn't have to follow the crowd to maintain your spirituality, whatever it is. That's something that comes from within.

I'm in the same boat. I just don't want to get up on a Sunday morning and it I wake up early enough, I want to take it easy and not rush around like I do during the week. I feel a little guilty, but I don't have a church and havent been active in one since I moved three years ago. I just say live and let live.

No, don't feel bad. Many religions use guilt to get people to stay, and guilt is not a reason to go.

You can be a good and spiritual person without having to support an organized religion. Practice your faith in your own way and time.

I recommend a quiet walk in the woods and doing some thinking....
