No laxatives should not be used as a way of losing weight. The purpose of a Laxative is so that a person who is constipated can use the bathroom. Also prolong use of a laxative is dangerous because the body will become used to not regulating its own disposal of waste.

No - the point of laxatives is to make you poop. If you take too many you will be living on the toilet and you can really screw up your bowels.
If your thought is to use them to lose weight you would be better off putting yourself through a cleanse which would do your entire body more good than using a laxative.
Go to the health food store and buy a gentle cleanse first so you aren't running to the toilet all day, then a couple of weeks later go on a detoxifying cleanse. You will lose weight by getting rid of all the junk in your body and you will feel a whole lot better.

NO.... you won't need a prescription to get them but however you would be facing a big danger !!!! The actual purpose of taking a laxative is to stimulate the large bowel to empty, which occurs only after the food and it's calories for energy have been absorbed through the small intestines. Essentially, a person taking laxatives to control weight is only going to cause their body to lose fluid, which can potentionally be followed by periods of water retention and an appearance of bloating (causing the sufferer to want to lose more weight and ingest more laxatives). The reason people suffering from eating disorders seem to lose weight while taking laxatives is because in most cases they are increasingly watching calorie intake and restricting food consumption, inducing vomiting, and/or compulsively exersizing.
Continued laxative use can cause bloating, cramping, dehydration, electrolyte disturbances and imbalances, cardiac arrhythmias, irregular heart beat and heart attack, renal problems, and death.
Phenolphthalein, a popular ingredient previously found in many brands of laxatives has now been recalled by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration, United States) due to studies indicating that it has been linked to cancer.
Withdrawal symptoms can be expected in stopping the use of laxatives after a continued period of using them as a "weight loss" method. These include, abdominal cramping, mild to severe constipation, bloating, mood swings and general feelings of fatigue and "feeling sick." In less severe cases the symptoms will usually subside in about 2 weeks, but in cases where a person have ingested handfuls or more laxatives on a regular basis, it may take longer and require medical assitance.

Laxative clean out your colon. Some people may be constipated and need help to have a bowel movement. It is my understanding that laxatives are not necessary for losing weight. Some can even be too harsh for your system.
I have been told that at times, they can cause problems.
If you are eating enough fruits, vegetables and making sure that you have enough fiber in your diet you should not need a laxative. Be sure to drink enough water to keep everything moving through your system.

NO NO NO!!! Laxatives are for occasional use to have a bowel movement. You can lose weight on them, but for the wrong reason...you'd be losing bodily fluids, it can also depleat your potassium level and cause heart problems...among other things.
They are not a diet aid!

Not prescription... extremely strong ones available over the counter... the real use of them is to relieve constipation and promote regularity... the only thing they will make you lose is 1) water weight (the real purpose of diuretics, but laxatives do this peripherally) and 2) intestinal contents.

no , the point of laxatives are to help someone who's constipated to go poop. They are available over the counter, but they shouldn't be used to lose weight! Your bowel can become dependent on them, and once that happens, you can't poop without them.
