The person is an E-6, up for E-7 now, and on the aviation side. This person has been an LPO 3 times, is now on a carrier as an LPO, has been in QA at the last duty station.

What options are there to going officer. Please explain a bit too.

Thanks!

It's NOT for me. I'm a vet and it's for my spouse.

Thank you anyhow!

he can apply for LDO now. To make Warrant he'd have to make Chief First. to be comptetive, he needs his associates degree.

if he already has the 4 year degree in hand, he can try for OCS, as long as he meets the age limitation. if he is over 27 he is too old for SWO or Avitation, but he can try for Intell, IWO, IP or Supply.

If he doesn't have a degree, he can try for STA-21, but the more credits he has towards a degree the better.

hee needs to get with his Chief, DIVO and CCC in order to start putting together a package and see just how competitive he would be for any commissioning program.

A warrant is neither a non-commissioned officer or a commissioned officer - that level is between the two. They have the duties of an NCO and the authority of company-grade officers.

Age has nothing to do with promotability.

Each branch of the service has a school (Army OCS - Officer Candidate School for instance) that can be applied for by active duty personnel. The application must have the approval and/or recommendation of the present commanding officer.

LPO - leading petty officer - E-6 is nothing to dismiss lightly. You don't say how long your friend has been in the navy, but it seems to be something in the area of 5 to 7 years.

OCS is not a bad choice if your friend is looking to make the navy a career.

Aviation and Maintenance (the QA bit)...

Warrant Officer is ONLY open for those who ARE Chiefs and have BEEN Chiefs

The LDO program is open to E-6 the first time they are eligible to TAKE the CPO test !!

Virtually ANY PO1 is too old for the "Seaman to Admiral" program... hahahahahahaha.

I'm ASSUMING your friend has a BA or BS... I KNOW LDO required a degree... Perhaps he could seek a straight commission ?

I got my BA in 1994 and applied to the LDO program because the wait for advancement to E-7 was a MINIMUM of 8 years at the time (test-scores, award points, and seniority). A buddy who didn't apply ONLY made E-7 in 2003 !!

I found having a commission as a Lt (jg) no more political that being a First Class.

Good luck

I am not sure of how old they are, but I think they may be limited to Warrant Officer due to age. Either way, they need to check with their Career Planner (not sure what the Navy calls it) to find out how to apply.

I was in the Corps on the Aviation side as well. Be advised: I had a couple of friends that went into the Warrant Officer ranks. Some liked it, some hated it because it was far more political than the enlisted ranks.

In the end, they are about to "put on the khaki" and apparently are doing well. The programs change on a regular basis, so please tell them to go check with the Career Planner to get the "real deal".

Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

STA-21 (Seaman to Admiral)

You'd be attached to an NROTC unit for two to three years to complete your degree.

I believe the age limit for that is still 34, so warrant or LDO are also possibilities.

Isn't a warrant officer the highest an enlisted person can go?
