Yes, he did. So when he died he went to heaven. There he entered the gate and he was shown to a hall for inventors where he was asked to sit and wait for his turn to get allotment of his room. There he met an old man with long hair and whithering skin sitting in one corner. So Ford went ot him and introduce himself and asked who he was and what did he invent to be here? The old man answered, well, my name is St. Peter and I invented woman for the world. Ford thought for a while and said, OK, some design fault. Inlet is too near the outlet.
See!! he was an automotive engineer. He therefore did invent the car.

Your friend is wrong. Karl Benz invented the first automobile. Henry Ford expanded upon the idea because old cars were flawed.

Ford was the first affordable car. Otto was the first liquid fuel engine, Benz was the first patented engine for a car. The name Otto became corrupted into the word automobile.
