Assuming your copy is questionable, you'll have to buy a copy, or you can use an older copy and never have any of the updates.

If your copy is actually legit, just go through the validation process, then if you've had to re-install Windows as many times as I have, be ready to spend an hour on the phone to Microsoft explaining that you have to re-install their unstable operating system every two weeks to keep it running smoothly. (Maybe its just me?)

I second the Ubuntu recommendation. You can download the LiveCD and boot from it to try it before you install it. Every PC in my house is now running Ubuntu, with the exception of my gaming rig, and as soon as I get WINE up and running reliably, even my gaming rig will be ubuntu based.

Hello Lord

The link below will take you to Microsoft Validation. You will need to download and run a small application that will report on what is a genuine application and what is not.
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/
A word or warning - if you know you are using illegal software,
I would not run the validation process.
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/WhyValidate.aspx?FamilyID=435bfce7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&displaylang=en
The validation is shown above.

You will only be able to upgrade to the original windows once you pass the validation process. This will help cut down on fraud, example if you where sold a fake version of Windows, but it will trace stolen and illegal copies.

Assuming you pass you will then be directed to upgrading your system.

If you know you have bad software, I am not here to judge but please buy the legal and original software.

I hope this helps.

Note

I have provide this help in the hope that you are not using an illegal version of Windows and that you were a victim of fraud. I just hope that the whole of Yahoo does not assume you are breaking the law.

Before you spend any money - Get UBUNTU (or XUBUNTU if your computer has less than 256MB of RAM).

It's a free, reliable and up to date operating system.

You can explore it from the "LIVE CD".

It's easy to install and use. You can dual boot it with other operating systems.

Once you have it installed, you gain access to thousands of free programs created by the open source community. There is excellent support - see the WIKI starter guide, and the Linux forums.

Always back up your data before making changes to your computer.

You should visit the Genuine Microsoft Software site, thereon its self-explanatory.But my advice would be not to go through the validation process because i did and have been trying to resolve the problem since 3 days but have only managed to create more complications in the form of unwanted pop-ups and warnings about all sorts of so-called risks to my system.
Best of luck,
Cheers.
