Canon elura100 has only 20 op zoom whereas Sony DCR-HC38 has 40 op zoom. But it does'nt have a still photo ability, an audio mic out or a a built in light for night shots. All this is available in Canon Elura100. Prize is much higher in Canon Elura than Sony. What is the best buy?

The Elura 100 does have still capture capabilities and does have a microphone port but does not have a built in light or flash for it's still capture.

The Elura beats the pants off the Sony.

First, this Sony seems to use Sony lenses not the Zeiss Tessar found in other modes like the HC26 and HC28. Sony is not known for making lenses while Canon is not only a great lens maker, but an innovative one, being the first to offer exotic elements like Flourite.

Next the Elura has a slightly better chip with 720,000 pixels for 6:19 mode, which means you're getting a full SD area for wide screen, not a croppoed window box mode as with some cameras (the Sony only uses 320,000 pixels). For standard mode you get 640,000 effective pixels (instead of 320,000). You get 1 MP for stills, which is not great, but not bad! Most camcorders only give 640k ir 320k for stills, this is a full 1,000k (or I MP). It also dithers specially for stills.

Now you get the mic input and AV INPUT (you only get AV OUTPUT on the Sony and most othere camcorders) so you can, for example, dub VHS tapes to digital and then transfer these to the computer. Sony does not support A to D into the camera conversion only D to A out of the camera.

I'll wager you can also set that mic input to act as a line level (home stereo standard -3DBM 0.775v not PRO stanards which are twice as hot at +3DBV and 1.25V)

I'll also wager Canon is still oferring 1 year parts AND LABOR (Sony is 1 year parts 90 day LABOR) (Canon is only 90 days for parts on Recording Head).

Canon ALSO records M-JPEG video to SD CARD, which may not be all that great as most software doesn't support M-JPEG (the DV FireWire streams is highly compatible AVI) which is similar to MPEG2. BUT, this is an interesting feature and one rarely found.

Night shot is the only place Sony shines, becuase they use and INFRA RED process so it works in NO LIGHT (0 lux) through object heat. COlors, however, can sometimes be strange.

Canon uses a light amplfier (doubles and qudruapleting the pixels and increase power -- much like a TV anntenna with a booster amp) and requires 2 lux. The effect of their night shot is a sort or grainy, smooth look that reminds you a little of takign digital zoom too far. I personally find this nice and it seems to look like network filmed TV drama instead of reality TV.

My personal feelings are the Canon has the most to offer, especially if you are looking to take stills and do more professional things like cable access TV shows.

But if you want to catch deer at night in the wood the Sony is the only way to go. You need some moon light with the Canon.

The Sony DCR-HC38 is a miniDV tape based camcorder. whilst the standard definition video is imported, it extremely is decompressed. 12 gig for forty 5 minutes is very virtually precise. there is no longer something incorrect with what you're doing or the laptop or the camcorder. it extremely is all behaving as designed. It gets extra exciting once you get to intense definition. 60 minutes imported to a working laptop or laptop will use over forty two gig of laptop demanding stress area. After the video is imported, you will edit... perhaps upload credit, transitions, titles, stills, despite. whilst the modifying is achieved, you have the main suitable undertaking. The you will render that undertaking out to despite format you choose. in case you choose the video to play back on a DVD participant, use a DVD authoring device (like iDVD, MyDVD, DVD Makers, Nero, and so on...). The DVD authoring device will compress the video right into a VOB record that a prevalent DVD participant can playback. you will no longer have the unique uncompressed video on that DVD. A single layer sparkling DVD can postpone to a hundred and twenty minutes of standard definition, VOB-compressed, video. it extremely is frequently performed back in a prevalent DVD participant. Or that comparable sparkling DVD can postpone to 4.7 gig of information. A double layer sparkling DVD can postpone to 240 minutes of standard definition, VOB-compressed, video. it extremely is frequently performed back in a prevalent DVD participant. Or that comparable sparkling DVD can postpone to eight.5 gig of information. So... in case you render that video out to a WMV or AVI or MOV record which could no longer be performed back in a prevalent DVD participant, the consequent video information record could be performed back on a working laptop or laptop with some sort of media participant. In "intense high quality", that forty 5 minute playback information record would be too huge to extra healthful on a DVD. yet once you compress it plenty, it could.
