I have 3 children. The first was with relaxation and no drugs. The second was w/ staydol (which I hated) and the third was with an epideral. And I have to say the epideral is the way to go. But all in all it was not the worst thing I've ever been through. It really is not that bad until transition and that only last for a short time. Trust me honey it is well worth any pain. If it were so bad there would be alot of only children.

you can sit and listen to stories of births all day long but ever situation and experience is different.. From the horror stories to the most amazing births yours will have its own memories. What I will say is to keep an open mind on everything, you may not need pain relief it depends on how high your pain threshold is.
you might be not coping with the labour and need all the drugs they can offer. The best advice I can give is to remain positive relaxed and open minded and you can't go far wrong, its perfecty normal to worry nearer the time so what will happen will happen and the rest you dont need to worry over it will all come right in the end..
Good luck

Thinking about labor is so hard on the nerves :) I am assuming you are from the UK, so I don't know for sure what pain control methods are popular there, but here in the US, I've had a few different expierences.. My first baby I had with just one shot in the bum of a pain reliever, the birth was very painful, I won't lie, but in all honesty when the baby was placed on me I forgot about it all and didn't care anymore about the labor. With my 2nd baby I had a shot of stadol which was awful, I had some sort of reaction to it and screamed and yelled and when it wore off the docs were asking me questions to see if I knew where and when I was lol... I got an epidural after that wore off and it was wonderful.. no more pain! With my 3rd baby I went natural and again it was very painful, but when baby was out and I had him on my chest it didn't matter, honestly it didn't.. my 4th and 5th were twins and had to be born c-section so that's different.
you can relax by thinking about baby, thinking what it will be like to hold the baby when he/she comes out, about what he/she will look like, by talking to your support people..

EPIDURAL! I personally found the contractions weren't that painful until I got to about 7cm, but then they were pretty bad. I had an epidural, and it was amazing. I could then relax, watch t.v and just lie there and enjoy the experience. The best decision by far! I couldn't speak more highly of them. Well recommended!

I was SO nervous too. I ended up getting an epidural and that really helped me. Honestly it wasn't as scary as I thought it was going to be.
I was induced and my contractions weren't that bad right away. I walked around the halls at the hospital to help. After my water broke then my contractions got intense and I took the epidural, that helped me relax and I even napped.
Good luck!

Try and remain open about the options that are available to you... It all depends on how your labour progresses. My only advice would be not to rule anything out just incase it turns out to be the best option for you on the day. I went in convinced that all I would be willing to take was gas and air and ended up having an epidural which was best for me at the time.

You will not go through life without any pain. You might get headaches toothache appedicitis to name but a few. you dont go through life worrying about this. Childbirth usually is quite painful and you will deal with the pain with available drugs and relaxation as it occurs, But remember the pain is only caused by strong muscle contractions, you are not seriously ill and after a few hours wou will have a lovely child for the rest of your life.
make sure you attend antenatal classes so you know what to expect and how to relax.

My most important tip for you is to listen to the midwives very carefully - they have helped hundreds if not thousands of women give birth and they are the undoubted experts! They are kind, compassionate yet very professional and without exception all I've met have been lovely. Follow what they say and you'll be fine. Best of luck for the birth and happy (soon to be) mother's day to you.
