Slavery is a mental concept . We are all independent souls and no body can be our masters. For our petty gains we surrender ourselves to others . This is the inherent weakness in normal human beings. In India we have numerous sadhus , are they slaves of any rulers?
The problem in India was we were too much independent . There was no big kingdom , to bring people together. We were fighting amongst ourselves . Or to destroy the others , we joined the British forces. So , it was easy for them to rule over us.
We are always independent . Before the British and even after that , in the individual capacity. Are we not now the slaves of our ministers and the corrupt society ? It all depends how much independent and strong willed you are.

You need to give us a little more information...who are you talking about? England abolished slavery in the late 1800's...long before it was ended in the US. But I have the impression you're not asking about the African slave trade.
