Despite all the marketing, the megapixel count is not the most important (or expensive) feature of a camera. It's just the easiest to measure. Other factors like sensor size and quality, camera computer, viewfinder optics, lens quality, and camera body structure contribute to cost.

These 2 cameras are very, very different. The Nikon D70 is an advanced d-SLR camera with photographic speed and capabilities valued by serious photographers. The $500 is only a beginning because the D70 requires separately purchased lenses.

The Sony W100 is a very good "point and shoot" camera, but does not create the same high image quality or have the same photographic flexibility as the Nikon.

So the Nikon is a "better" camera for someone who wants to get very serious about photography, is willing to carry around multiple lenses, and is willing to learn to make many camera adjustments for the best pics.

The Sony is a "better" camera for someone who wants very good pictures and values the convenience of a camera that is easy to carry and needs only a few camera adjustments. It also has a video clip capability that the Nikon does not have.

Good Luck

Megapixels are fine, IF you have the sensor size to support it.

Compact P&S digicams sensor is about the size of 1/2 your pinky finger nail. DSLR's Sensor is about the size of a nickel.

It's like comparing old 110 film vs 35mm. They both were 100 ISO, but the 35mm negative produced much better results due to larger negative.

ALSO better metering, better lens, and better focus makes a DSLR beat a compact digicam 95% of the time. Sometimes P&S cameras get lucky with outdoor shots
