There are no "9 pits of hell." Perhaps you are talking about Dante's Inferno, as found in the Divine Comedy? Wikipedia has a great article on it.

Actually that was something that Dante came up with in the Divine Comedy. It's not something that Christianity as a whole subscribes to. It's also speculated that Dante was under demonic possession when he wrote the Divine Comedy.
