Because they have no choice in the matter. Whether they agree with the war or not--they must go and serve their country. They are putting their lives on the line for some senseless act of agression that we call a war. Their families are at home suffering without them and they don't know if they will ever return.

People consider American Soldiers heroes simply because they are. They not only risk their lives for our country on a daily basis, but also sacrifice their civilian lives. Only a hero could stay away from his family and friends for years at a time, risking his life for strangers, and do so without a complaint. I suggest that you step back and look at what every soldier really does for YOUR country and why you have the freedom you do. I'm curious as to what your definition of a hero IS....

I follow an unofficial British Army website (I could personally win a gold medal for being the world's most civilian person) and a little while ago an American ex-serviceman (or veteran as I suppose it is termed in the USA) came on to it with some quite valid questions but couched in an American style. The point at which the British "old sweats" lost their cool was when he stated that "people come up to me and thank for for my service". Adding information about his close involvement in becoming a pastor at a local church did him no favours either. His style would be considered boasting in the UK. He was severely chastised, and I suppose is still wondering what the hell it was he said. Understatement goes a long way over here, but not, I see, in the USA.

Let me first say, Lizzie, I am one of those family members that you speak of, and let me tell you NOT to speak for me or other family members because you have NO idea. If you know a few families that are suffering, then speak for them and say "I know a few families who are suffering." But you dont KNOW ME!! I am NOT suffering!! I support my husband and his job and I love him more than anything so I am NOT SUFFERING. OMG that fires me up more than anything for some clueless punk to speak for me when they dont know what I have to say.
And now to address the question. Comes down to selfless service. Soldiers join the military knowing they will be separated from their families, serve in an unpopular war, and potentially get killed in action. And (for the most part), they do so without complaint and go willingly. My husband has deployed to Egypt, Afghanistan, and Iraq since 2002, and getting ready for Iraq deployment number 2 very soon. No complaints from him, in fact, he is READY...he WANTS TO GO DO HIS JOB. HE IS MY HERO....a hero in the true sense of the word.
And then there are the Watadas and Agouyas of the world that weiney out of service and get the label of brave and hero. And that is a bunch of crap.

Hero is a word that is so overused that it has little meaning left. American soldiers are generally decent, honest people. Those who face danger and do their jobs while conquering fear are heroes, by definition.

They are all heros, one and all.....Some give more , but all give some. They put their life on the laine everyday, so people like you can sit home, safe and sound and ask dumbass questions...
If it weren't for our Brave and Heroic Military, you might not have such freedoms and liberties. You might even be in a Concentration Camp, for your views

Are you kidding me??? Did you really ask this question? American Slodiers are heros because they fight for our rights, our freedom, our way of life. They PROTECT and SERVE for you, and don't ask you for anything. Yes they are paid to do so, but they volunteered their lives so that you you didn't get drafted.

America is a culture of self. Were all about the individual. When soldiers give up so much for others we respect that greatly.
