Currently I am teaching in China. The first thing I would do is aquaint yourself with the rail system here. From either Beijing or Shanghai, you can get to most anywhere. The Great Wall, just north of Beijing is a must, as well as the many open markets. Both Beijing and Shanghai have tours of jade, silk, and pearl establishments which I found intriguing. But one of the best ways is simply to walk the streets. Make sure you note landmarks to keep from getting lost, or have someone write down your hotel address to give to a taxi driver. If you haven't been here, you will be amazed by so many things. Enjoy your trip! And think about coming back to teach English...many opportunities.

If it is the first time for you to go to China, then these are some places you must go: Beijing (Forbidden City, Summer palace, Temple of Heaven, Great Wall), Xi'an (Terra Cotta Warriors), Guilin (Li River and Yangshuo). And then you can choose the other places according your interests. If you like buddhism, you can visit Tibet. If you like the ethnic culture, you may go to Yunnan province... Get more information at the following websites. Good luck and have a good time in China.

Shanghai is a city about shopping and eating. Beijing surely has more attractions. But if you get enough time I think you should spend several days in Xian where you can find lots of historical spots worth to see.

There are many places to visit in and around Beijing as well as near Shanghai. Suzhou, Hangzhou, Zhouzhuang (one of the "water" towns near Shanghai) are all options; Then in Beijing there are tons of sites -- Forbidden city, JingShan Park, Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, etc.....Tough to list all the possibilities.
