Yesterday i was trying to teach my dog beg. He is a border collie X bernese mountain dog(2years old), so very intelligent (don't mean to brag), he knows thousands of tricks. But the one this he can't master is beg. He already knows jump, paw, and hi-five and this confuses him. I get him to sit and then lift the treat above his nose slowly and he either barks(beacause i taught him speak) or he gives me his paw or hi-five or jumps up. Am i doing something wrong? If so, can anyone tell me how to do it properly. And no stupid answers please, if you dont know it then don't answer it lol. Thanks =] xx

i taught all three of mine (ive since lost the male last year) to 'sit up' with a clicker and plenty of treats! first i got them all used to the clicker, and when i clicked it meant click=food=praise! they all new 'sit' anyway so i just added the click, so it became 'sit'-click=treats-this just took 5 mins! (all very food driven!) the next step was to sit them all in a row and hold the treat above their heads-so they had to lean back on their haunches and look up-and as soon as their front feet left the ground i clicked and treated, i only had to repeat this about 5 times-as lancashire heelers are very brainy dogs, and learn very quickly-by which time they were all 'sitting-up' in the 'beg' position. i then added the command 'sit-up' at the same time as the clicker and treated. they learnt this in the space on an hour! and will now 'sit-up' automatically if a biscuit is shown! ive found that my dogs were very easy to train to do tricks (usually taking less than a half hour to learn each trick), the dog knew 'gimme-five' (he performed this for peter purves at crufts 2000! i was well chuffed and everyone thought he was so cute LOL) he also did 'high-five' and he would do 'double-fives' (i held my hands out and he would jump up and 'slap' both paws into my hands!) the older girl does 'please' (single bark) 'speak' (multi barks/whines) 'play dead' 'roll over' 'sit-up' and 'go back' (walking backwards) the other girl only knows 'sit-up' !

Have your dog sit, facing you. Hold his favorite treat just above his head and tell him, "Say please." Your dog will probably lift his front feet off the ground to reach the treat. As soon as the feet are lifted, even a little bit, give him the treat.
This is a hard trick for most dogs. Wait a little longer each time before giving the treat, but be careful not to let your dog fall over on his back. You are helping your dog develop his balance. Be kind and only do this a couple of times.

A well-trained dog makes everyone happy, including his owner. Take a little time training him, and you'll never regret it; you'll always have an obedient dog by your side. Find more https://tr.im/BjuMD

By their nature, dogs are pack animals with a well-defined social order. Through basic training, you need to consistently make sure your puppy understands that you are the leader, not him. So in teaching him the basic rules, you take on the role of pack leader.

To fit into the family circle, your dog must be taught to recognize his name and such commands as come, heel, lie down and sit.

some dogs are not balanced to be able to sit up and beg. if he can do all the tricks do not be unhappy that he can not sit up and beg. to try to teach is have him sit with his back against a wall and have give you his paw and try to have him sit up. also use a clicker.

i have never taught any of my dogs to beg, It is important to teach them to speak on command As at any time you feel unsafe your will bark on your command. some people are afraid of dogs and a barking dog attract attention

Why should he beg? Is he short of money or something ? Oops I just realized and came back to back to edit, you cant afford to feed him and he's hungry. HHHHHHHoooooo! poor thing I will send him a bone.

Stop trying. It's not a natural position for a dog to adopt. It might look cute to humans, but it's undignified for any creature to have to beg. Think about it.

Next time you offer him some food, tell him to "Sit" - then when he's sitting, tell him to "Beg" - he will lift his front paws up for you.

First you need to teach him the phrase "oi, got any spare change for acup of tea mate ?"

Then send him to beg next to a bus stop.
