Who came up with the myth "Death in apostacy in Islam"?

In the Quran apostacy is mention several times,with none of them prescribing death sentences.They are only promised with hellfire.
"Those who believe,then disbelieve,then believe again,then disbelief,and then increase in their disbelief-Allah will never forgive them nor guide them to the path."
Sura An-Nisa 4:137
The hadith "Kill anyone who change their religion" is only transmitted by one individual,and was not confirmed by other Narrator.This hadith need further speculations
And there's a story confirmed this:
"In one incident,the prophet pardoned Abdullah bin Sa'd,after he renounced Islam.After spending some time in Madina,he recanted and returned to the religion of Quraisyh.When he was brought to the Prophet,he subsquently pardoned Abdullah bin Sa'd (Ibn Hisham).
The incident where an Afghanistan guy were executed for conversion toward Christianity is a propaganda.He leave Islam 15 years during Taliban reign.He was unharmed during that time.It was Hamid Karzai who execute him

the western media, just made it up, same like they made up the 72 virgin thingy. or how the pres of Iran got mis quoted in English and the media ran with it, he never said he would wipe israel off the map. but the media likes to cook up war fever, and the sheeple oh they been trained, just like they been trained to pass up American made good for Chinese, they been trained to believe. In the Islamic country I live in, people leave Islam for Christian, or Christian leave for Islam, no one is killed. on a side note, we do hang drug dealers, rapists, and child molesters, don't matter what religion they are. :)

Yes.That guy Abdul Rahman who were put to death because he convert to Christianity is a propaganda.He leave Islam during the Taliban reign for about 15 years.By the right,the Taliban(Whom are the one who has been regarded as Muslim extremist) would have kill him long ago.But they leave him unharmed.

Suddenly this guy Hamid Karzai (The U.S appointed Afghanistan President) said that this guy has to put to death?

What a silly cheap propaganda that everyone can see.

I believe the media and it's supporters (ie government) created these lies to discredit Islam and to justify the actions of many foreign governments that invade the Middle East. When you convince people that these claims are true, it becomes easier to manipulate them into believing many other things as well.
