Boot with the linux CD and install. A few screens later it will ask you whether you want to replace the current operating system - Choose no and continue to install

You could use PartitionLogic to resize your windows partition, then just install Linux on the free space.

For new Linux users, I recommend UBUNTU (or XUBUNTU if the computer has less than 256MB of RAM).

It's a free, reliable and up to date operating system.

You can explore it from the "LIVE CD".

It's easy to install and use. You can dual boot it with other operating systems.

Once you have it installed, you gain access to thousands of free programs created by the open source community. There is excellent support - see the WIKI starter guide, and the Linux forums.

Always back up your data before making changes to your computer.

Dual boot installation of Linux on a computer having windows.
Note down how many partitions you have on your pc. Keep the partition empty where you want to install Linux. If possible format the partition where you want to install Linux to FAT32 before starting installation.
After you start the linux installtion you will come across the partitioning dialog. Linux by defaults delects the windows installation and sees the empty partition and suggests you the partitioning scheme. Just make sure you choose to keep the windows installation intact, and you opt to create a dual boot installation. And select the partition for linux other than your windows partition.
Select the GRUB bootlaoder, if you are asked to.
Rest is taken care by default.
Read the onscreen options as they come by and proceed.

i don't know how to install Linux but i know how to install windows!
with the windows xp installation disk you can select what partition you want to install on and whether or should it be the main operating system. but because your windows was Pre installed you'll probably won't Have a disk. you will also reformat the partition so it will be a boot-able drive. to do this create a windows start up disk. (for details on how to create a start up disk go to http://mirror.href.com/thestarman/winxp/winxpsd.htm
)
when that's done. look at the contents of the disk, if FORMAT.com, copy it from c:\WINDOWS\command\ or from the Internet. boot up the computer with the floppy disk in and
then at the command prompt type
format x:/s
so it should look like.
A:\> format c:/s
(where x is your drive that you want to boot from.)
!!!!! please make sure that you save all files on that drive as it will be wiped !!!!!

you should now have windows on a boot-able drive (C:\)
and nothing a blank boot-able drive (w/e drive letter it was)
now install Linux on that partition

the spell check isn't very good on this so if it don't make sense cause it put weird words in email me at sashalover4eva@yahoo.co.uk

in case you partition the demanding stress for a separate OS, it will ask you which ones OS you prefer as nicely upon initiate-up. in case you run a separate demanding stress for a 2d OS (like I do) you will might desire to manually boot into the BIOS and alter the boot order around (whenever you prefer to alter). then you definately shop and go out the BIOS. it will restart and boot from the stress you place it as nicely. From my stories, you do no longer might desire to apply a application to create a partition. once you boot the OS from the CD (to place in it) you are able to set it to create a partition. it will ask the place you prefer to shop the OS to, and it could provide the choice to press a key and create a partition precise then and there.
