My dog is 4 years old, he belonged to a family with a yard. He was house trained, and so we figured he could go on a leash. Unfortunately, he is unable to do anything. I take him out on a regular basis. Even in the middle of the night. Still, some how he just doesn't go and its been a really frustrating problem. Especially, since I'm the one who has to clean up after him.

Time to train.

1) Help dog to become familiar with collar.
Have dog wear a collar in the house, 24/7 always be sure at least 3 fingers can fit between collar and neck of dog. Check regularly and adjust whenever necessary.

2) If dog just sits and does not want to walk when placed on leash. (( but is generally obiedent, will come when called and sit when asked. )) Bring a small favorite toy or ball and pocket full of small treats. Put dog on LONG leash or retractable leash and have him follow you out of house w/ leash extended. When dog comes to you offer treat and praise. Practice in house. (comfortable familiar setting will help him become familiar with task without distactions, then repeat outside) . Once mastered, shorten leash and teach commands like sit, walk, heal, all while on shorter leash.

3) If dog pulls, or bites leash when trying to walk him on leash. Try the following. Once again have a pocket full of small treats, for praising good behavior. Also, have a small spritzer bottle of water and 1/3 vinigar mixture. Spritz dog when he bites leash or jumps up while saying 'NO" or "Down".

If dog pulls and is a med. or large size breed, try a choker collar that is only put on when training and walking outside. (Do not leave a chain choker on in the house!) These are used for training puposes only and can be very affective when used properly. Be sure it is big enough for breed of dog and put on properly w/ a gentle tug it should tighten and will not hurt dog, also, when slacked it will hang loosely aournd dogs, neck. When dog pulls ahead, choker will tighten, and you will comand him to heal or come to you. Have dog sit near you and relax. Then shorten leash and have dog 'walk' beside you a short distance, sit and offer treat for job well done. Repeat exercise several times and he should master task.

4) Remember to be consistant and take it slowly. Break the trianing down into little accomplishments. Wearing collar and leash in house 1st., while sitting next to you may be another way to help dog become familiar with leash. ( do not allow him to bite on it. Just pet him while he sits, or lays beside you. ) Then have him walk from room to room short distances, then offer treat. Once mastered, head on outside and repeat process in small steps.

You're gonna need to dedicate A LOT of time to this. You're dog isn't used to doing his business on a leash. He just doesn't understand what to do. Think about how horrible this is to him; he doesn't know it's OK to go when he's on his leash (& is uncomfortable doing it) & he knows he's not supposed to go in the house. Poor guy doesn't know what to do. So do this- Feed him about 15 - 20 minutes before you're ready to take him out. Take some of his favorite treats with you in your pocket. And wait...and walk...and wait...and walk...and repeat...until he goes. When he does his stuff praise him a lot and give him a hand full of treats. When you do catch him going inside be loud (clap your hands, shake a can of pennies) and yell at him as loud as you dare. Don't rub his nose in it & if you don't see him do it, don't drag him over to it & scold him. It will work, just give it time, dedication & patience. good luck

Well..you have not given much information..how old is your dog if he/she is a puppy and has never been on a leash before then you simply need to put it on and work with him/her to get them used to it..If it is an older dog that has never been on a leash then you need to do the same thing. You need to make sure that you do not tug and pull be patient and he/she will get used to the idea..Also keep little bite size treats with you as you are working with him/her and everytime he/she take a few steps reward with the treats..Best Wishes

Why wont your dog go on a leash, just put it on the dog, you are the owner and the person in charge not the dog.

Try a harness on your dog. You still have full control and your dog wont feel as tho he/she is being pulled around the neck
