Is chewing any good for teeth or should be avoided. Is it true what they write on the cover (sugar free)

The sugar-free claim is true, and that chewing gum should not cause dental caries, however the most common artificial sweetener for the chewing gum is aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal or additive 951).

Aspartame is considered a neurotoxin (damages brain and nerve cells) and linked with brain tumours. In addition, in temperatures of 30 degrees celcius or higher (as in the human body), it breaks down to phenylalanine, methanol (wood alcohol) and formaldehyde (used to preserve dead bodies). These are poisons.

There is a better form of sugar-free gum available, sweetened with a natural sugar alcohol derived from birch trees, berries and some herbs. It is called Xylitol. There is a brand called Spry (as well as a few others) available from your health food shop. The added benefit to increasing saliva production (which is often why chewing gum after meals is recommended) is that xylitol actually inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria in the mouth.

It tastes just like sugar and has been researched since the 1970's with no adverse effects.
