I can already type approximately 40wpm but would like to increase this. The thing is, my fingering is all over the place and I have to look at the keyboard throughout.

How long would it take to learn to touch-type from scratch? Is there a standard amount of time that it usually takes?

I taught typing in 4th-5th grade classes last year and from what i noticed, it took 30 minutes a day of practicing everyday to increase your ability level and to remember what you learned. I learned by using "lets learn to type" on an OLD OLD computer. It looked like the first program that was ever out. I also practiced my speed by talking with 4-5 people on AIM in college. I taught my kids using mavis beacon. This shows the correct way to place your fingers so that you are not all over the place. Most of them learned how to avoid looking at the keyboard and to just watch what they were typing. We worked on it for about 6 months... (Yes it is for adults too) and if I remember correctly, it took me a few months to learn the whole keyboard, and to type without looking but the speed and accuracy took a bit longer.... Now I type about 85 words a minute accurately.

It depends on the person. I do a lot of my boss' letters (I'm actually a carer) and she's amazed at my speed and accuracy but I learnt at school and have been typing practically every day since. I even type my diary now and have done for a good few years - I've been keeping the diary itself for 26 years.

It's best to start to learn properly as soon as you can. You always start on the home keys and work round from them. There are some websites that can teach you to type, I sometimes go on them to check my speed and accuracy.

Try something like ...

You get a free trial with them and it's not as easy as it seems. I thought I'd pass with flying colours as I've been typing for so long and was trained by a professional but I was disgusted to see that it says I only type at a rate of about 35 wpm with an accuracy level in the 90%s.

I can always use the excuse that I've been on nightshift and have no intentions of going to sleep.

You will find that if you look at the keys you will make mistakes. Do it without looking.
If you can type 40wpm you must know where the letters are on the keys, so it shouldn't be a problem.

If you don't know where the keys are, the simplest way is to practice.

using left hand, type over and over again, asdfg. Do this for 10 minutes. Then with your right hand type, ;lkjh over and over, then go on to the top row and the bottom row and the numbers.

Good luck, but 40 wpm is good, unless you have a job that needs more.
