Bleeding gums is a sign of Chronic Gingivitis and the main cause is the build up of plaque and bacteria.
One way to relieve the pain is to gargle with warm salty water, this will act as an antiseptic and ease the pain, Corsodyl mouthwash is also very good as it's designed for gum disease.
You will never be able to get the gums to re-attach completely but you can help stop the process from spreading.
Try investing in some Disclosing Tablets, these little tablets will stain your teeth and gums and will hi light the areas that you miss whilst brushing, an electric toothbrush with a built in timer is also very useful, as the recommended time for brushing the teeth is 2 minutes.
The oral hygiene needs to be of a very high standard, brushing with fluoride toothpaste, flossing and using a mouthwash for tartar control will help!

I'm a dentist.

Yes, in most cases you can stop gum bleeding. Where decay is concerned, for the most part, you can only prevent it. Once it has developed and broken through the enamel to the dentin, you cannot stop it from progressing without having a filling.

Finally, gums grow back in some situations and in some places, but not in others. The little triangular pieces of gum between your teeth (i.e. the "interdental papillae") do not grow back once they've shrunken or are lost.

if your gums are bleeding then this is a sign of gum disease and to help it ..keep brushing, do not stop if they bleed this will only make it worse...as for gums growing back, once gum has been destroyed by disease it will not grow back and decay will only affect tooth tissue, i am a dental nurse with 25 years experience

No. gingiva (gums) do not grow back once you have recession. The way to stop bleeding gingiva is by flossing daily. After 5 to 7 days of flossing daily, your gingiva will stop bleeding. Healthy gingiva will not bleed and flossing gets bacteria out from under the gum line and between teeth.
