Since this question is not in trivia or polls and surveys then I must believe you are speaking of lumber ..........If I am right then here is the answer.
It is a piece of wood that can measure any length, but the width and depth is called a 2x4 but it actually measures
1 3/4 x 1 3/4 .

published by the US Department of Commerce. These standards allow soft lumber, commonly known in the building trade as a 2 x 4, to be labeled using the "Nominal sizes" method. "Nominal sizes" were originally derived from the dimensions of rough lumber before surfacing, and are always greater than the actual dimensions; thus a dry "2 x 4" is surfaced to actual dimensions of 1-1/2 inches x 3-1/2 inches (38 mm x 89 mm).
In other words, nominal sizes are size designations used for convenience in describing approximate, rather than actual size.
example of 1'x5' it measures
3/4 "x 4 3/4 "

This type of lumner is in high demand because it actually measures for example 2 " X 4 ".....if it is a 1 x 5 it actually measures 1" x5 "

In lumber, it is a board that was rough cut to 2 inches by 4 inches and usually about 8 feet long. Other lengths are available at the lumber yard.
After being rough cut, it is sanded to a finished dimension of 1 1/2 inches by 3 1/2 inches.

It was originally a piece of wood that was 12 feet long X 2 inches X 4 inches. The actual measurement nowadays escapes me. Sorry I can't give you the correct answer. (john, rock island, il)

A 2x4 is a dimensional lumber stud common in house framing. It is so called based on its dimensions.
