Is it because of the Russians or are the French still a threat?

If nuclear depth charges can squash a sub up to 20km away, we can prevent some unwanted French imports, plus give them a tsunami.

The big threat is that arms manufacturers might one day find themselves with no weapons to make. This can't happen. So they've got to get their lobbyists to pester their local congressmen yet again and remind them just how many jobs depend on these weapons and just how many rich campaign contributors also happen to be stockholders in arms manufacturing businesses.

The point of post-modern economies is no longer to extract and transform resources, but to create work to justify the continuation of said economies.

No. Someone wants to save the world from further pain and agony by wiping out the face of the earth and be cheap, as funeral bills are going to be unpaid.
