The reason is as the woman mentioned above- binding agreements.
But deeper to the matter is the legitimisation of Israel's illegal annexation of Arab houses and land (1948-on) which do not form part of the 1967-8 UN-agreed and stipulated Israeli boundaries.
There are still Arab (now elderly) refugees who have the keys and title deeds to their houses in central Jerusalem (now since occupied by Israelis)- both parties are innocent but the government certainly isn't.
The main miscomprehension is that issue of Israel's right to exist is constrfued as Jews having no right to exist. But this is wrong- the issue is of Israel not being forced to conform to an internationall y agreed boundary- and in turn Israel recognising Palestinian territorial demands.
My solution: rename Israel, to Palestine and make all Arabs and Jews, Christians (yes there are many Arab Christians as refugees) all equal citizens under this one nation which includes all former pre-1948 territory.
Then, everyone is equal, land issues can be resolved, Arabs gain right of return and everyone can all get along with their lives.
It's not a new concept- Palestine had plenty of Jews and Arabs living quite peacefully side-by-side until the Balfour agreement.
Why not just scrap the whole silly idea and return to the model that worked?

It's very important.... more than anybody can imagine. Haven't anybody asked him/herself why does a powerful state like Israel which has nuclear weapons and support from U.S insists that it should be recognized by the Palestinians who only have their bare bodies to fight with? Why do the weak Palestinians make a difference though Israel is recognized by the whole world? It's not a matter of recognition only, by recognizing Israel the Palestinians will give up their land and admit that their stolen land is legally "dwelt" by the Jews who came from all around the world to establish the State of Israel and be called "Israelis" as a nationality not only a religion. And the next Palestinian generations will forget their land in which their ascendents lived long time ago, no body will fight, no body will condemn that, even! Mentioning the name "Palestine" is a big problem for Israel, this name takes it back to 1947 and the troubles of that year. Palestine is now " the Palestinian territories"..... giving 78% of the land, and on the rest Israel gives a little for the Palestinians and builds settlements on the other.

Because this is how Palestinians would recognize that Israeli occupation is legal and that they agree with it,that Israel's crimes and grab of land are totally OK...That Israel is perfectly justified in building new settlements on Palestinian land,in letting Palestinians homeless,in killing civilians...This recognition happened once and it didn't bring anything good for the Palestinians, not to mention that we are still talking about the creation of a Palestinian state. We must remember that the Palestinians, through the PLO,recognized Israel in the borders from 1967,giving up more then 70% of the land they were entitled according to the partition plan...But Israel wants to be recognized as it exists today, with no permanent borders drawn...

The clue is that Israel is not telling the Palestinians "we will recognize your country, if you will recognize ours". It's a one way street -- the Palestinians are supposed to recognize Israel before Israel will even think about stopping its settlement of the Palestinian territories. Will the stubborn, proud and aggrieved Arabs who believe Israel has already stolen much of their land agree to bow down to their enemy Israel, in return for nothing? No way.
Therefore, Israel's preconditions are a way to keep the conflict going so that more settlers can move into the West Bank and claim more land for Israel. If Palestine becomes a sovereign nation, it gets recognized borders. Until it does, Israel can say the land is up for grabs. See the game?
I'm not saying the Palestinians are the good guys here, they have committed many violent acts of terrorism against Israel and innocent Israeli citizens.
This cannot go on forever. Someone has to decide who has the right to what land, because apparently neither side, on its own, is willing to negotiate and offer and accept a series of realistic compromises. The US used to be the peace broker, and could have settled this dispute 6 years ago. But we inexplicably bowed out of a situation where we could have negotiated a peace, and decided instead to start a war in a neighboring country which has destabilized the middle east even more.

look Israel/Palestine subject is the final unsolved colonial rule in the international. the two have the the perfect option to exist and the two could remedy that colonial conflict like different former colonies. The Israeli colonist could found out that their existence is predicated on the existence's of the close by people of Palestine.

Well, it depends.
From a naive point of view, it isn't important at all.
If someone wants to deny the reality of your existence and is still insisting that you shouldn't, well nuts to them. Its their problem, not yours.
However, the basic issue is that the world wants there to be a final peaceful solution to the conflict. Israel agrees with that basic premise. That being the case, in order for that to happen, certain basic things have to happen first.
And that is that if the Palestinians want any sort of basic lasting peace they must recognize Israel, not just the reality of its being, but the reality that it deserves to continue to exist. As of now, that hasn't happened (certain signed peace agreements notwithstanding). That being the case, Israel must keep on insisting that that happen otherwise any other negotiations would be moot. Because if the Arabs did NOT recognize Israel, then that means they WANT Israel to cease to exist. And how can someone sign a peace agreement with someone else who doesn't want you to exist?

It is important for Israel's neighbors to recognise its right to exist if it is to enter into binding treaties with them. Look at it this way: how can you sign a peace treaty with a non-entity?
Haiti had the same problem in the 19th century; treaties, trade agreements, etc., were basically not worth the paper they were written on because countries did not recognise her sovereignty. And because the agreements were worthless, the other side usually reneged without sanction.
