You have to Taft Hartley in by being employed as a speaking actor in an Equity play for a sepecific amount of time (generally a week) or by Taft Hartley into a sister union such as SAG or AFTRA, the same way.

A friend of mine sang in the choir for a NBC movie and because she was singing she was Eligable for a Taft Hartley.

Now, if she wants to get an Equity card she has to pay a new fee, which is probably in the $800 to $1,200 range for the EQuity Card.

Do understand, however, a SAG or EQuity card is like $1,700 today in a single certfied check payment.

Also you can't work non-union once you get your card, except for Equity Wavier plays.

Contact Equity directly. You should be able to find their web page on google. Or try The Stage Newspaper - which you can get at Whsmiths.
You probably don't need it, but as it's an actor's union it helps when it comes to getting a fair wage and conditions to work in. - Take it from one who has worked in the costume side of the buisness. Good luck.
P.S. With an Equity card you can 'protect' your name - so that only you will be known as that name.

Well the simplest way is to audition for an equity theater and hope you get a part because then you get your card and sign a contract saying you can only audition for equity theaters. Also if you live in NYC there is a theme restaurant called Jekyll and Hyde and if you get a job there you receive your equity card because you have to keep in character while your waitressing.

You need 8 seperate professional contracts to apply, but you don't need an equity card - in fact, many professional actors have long since given up on it as it is meaningless these days. Fight your way into the business without it.

Wow! My name is Helen S too! My uncle is an actor and got his equity card by going to Cambridge Uni and being in the Cambridge footlights.
Equity cards are given to people if there is no one else who can possibly play the part. That is why people in Cambridge footlights get them - only graduates of Cambridge can be in the Cambridge footlights.
