A common problem with 1995 to 2002 model year Crown Vics, Grand Marquis, and Town Cars is for a loud grinding, crunching type noise to occur when going over a bump while the steering wheel is turned to full lock. The fix is to lubricate the steering stops with the appropriate grease, so that it cushions the sound of the metal to metal contact between the steering knuckle and the lower control arm. To wzzrd, where do you get this idea that dealership techs only know how to "hook up a machine to find out what's wrong with it"? And if you are a REAL "mechanic" as you proclaim to be, what the hell does a front suspension issue have to do with the need to hook up a scan tool?

Just because you took it to a Ford dealership doesn't mean the problem cannot be solved. It is very hard to find a competent repair shop. Most of the dealerships do not have anyone who can troubleshoot a problem. All they are taught is to read a computer hookup. They know nothing about finding a problem that isn't hooked to a sensor. The real mechanics out there will have a long waiting list but are worth waiting for once you find one. Hopefully you will have luck in finding one close to you. Anything can be fixed if the person working on it knows what they're doing. Ask people in your local area for a honest mechanic and see what turns up. Good luck.
