Could well be glow plugs, could also be a tiny air leak into the plumbing allowing the fuel to drain back to the tank. Then the pump has to work very hard to drag the fuel back up to the engine - similar symptoms to a duff pump.
Don't think much of your garage - any good diesel mechanic should be able to check & test your systems, working or not! I'd go somewhere else.

RE:
Rover 75 diesel starting problem-engine turns over but won,t fire eventually starts any ideas?
It eventually fires up but could be 24 hours after initial problem - AA thought it might be fuel pump but surely wouldn't start at all then? Garage can't fix it unless I get it to them when it's not working - help needed!

It could be your glow plugs need replacing. If this does not work I would get the fuel injector pump checked out.It sounds as though you have the same problem as I had with my diesel car.Mine was the pump.It would take a while to start when cold, but usually no problem when warm.

Could be that the glow plugs are not working correctly, when the car does eventually start if there is a lot of smoke from the exhaust it will be the glow plugs

it will be the glow plug relay .this has failed due to being underwater . the drain tubes in the wiper plenum block and the relay then sits in rainwater . situated in the ecu housing in front of the pollen filter . dont forget to unblock the drain tubes or it will happen again . glow plug relay about £76 . easy to fit have done quite a few .

It could be the glow plugs or it may have a small pin hole on the fuel line letting the fuel go back to the tank try bleading it

You need to replace the glow plugs, good luck with the one behind the injector pump, that's a right pigs ear to get at
