I don't patronize an establishment twice if I am not treated with respect an courtesy, the "golden rule" definitely applies here. I always try to treat those who are helping me with the same respect and courtesy I expect.

Very simply, do you want to have return business? Treat a customer with disrespect or rudeness and that's one customer who will more than likely not return to you for whatever goods or services you're providing. The word of mouth factor also comes into play. If everyone knows your place of business as the place where all the jerks work, they're not going to give you business either. The opposite is also true. Recommendations from friends about a particular business is a very powerful marketing tool, and one that can only be successful through respect and courtesy.
That's my two cents for ya.

On the most basic level, I think it's wise to treat everyone with respect and courtesy as much as possible. Also the bottom line is that the customer is paying for goods and/or services from your business or place of work. Therefore they are paying your wages or salary, which allows for food, shelter, and indoor plumbing.

People tend to return to thinks that make them feel good. If you respect a customer and give them common courtesy (honesty also helps) they will keep coming back.

So they will come back and spend more. Word of bad service spreads like wildfire and can travel to many people from just one person. People tend to not share details of a positive experience. That's why each and every person walking through your establishment's doors must be consistently treated equally and will respect and courtesy.
And it is just nice.

so that they leave feeling that they have had a positive experience. That way they are far more likely to come back for more.
Despite rumour to the opposite, most people don't actually enjoy shopping, it's a must-do chore so anything pleasant that happens is a bonus and will be remembered as such
