Absolutely. Has nothing to do with a lack of interest in his wife or his wife not satisfying him - its just that men enjoy that and it gives them such a release of tension and stress. Very normal - if there is any such thing in marriage.

Not just men, but women also.

In most mature, well-balanced relationships, people do not automatically "abandon" self-pleasure, just because they now have an unlimited opportunity for intercourse and oral sex.

Masturbation is not an "inferior" form of sex; indulged in due to the absence of other forms. It is a unique form of sexual pleasure; just like intercourse or oral.

Statistics show that up to 90% of the total male population masturbates, and based on data collected circa 1977 - 1979, 74% of married women masturbated; 16% of these women did so frequently.

In a 2007 survey conducted by The Gazette - a student newspaper - the results were:

1-3 times a week (M) 26% (F) 39%
4-9 times a week (M) 42% (F) 16%

Leading sexual educators such as Dr. Ruth and Betty Dodson will echo these same opinions and statistics.

I believe that it is totally acceptable for a married man (or woman ) to masturbate as long as it is not taking place instead of sex with spouse.
If partners can communicate their needs and desires with one another and accept that masturbation is natural and okay, masturbation should not be a problem in any marriage.
If a married man masturbates it does not mean there is anything wrong in his marriage.
A married man may masturbate to relax and because it feels good, or perhaps because his sex drive is higher than his wife's sex drive. It could be because there is separation by distance, illness or during late pregnancy.
Also for some people it is quick and there is no responsibility with it.
Getting off topic for a moment, mutual masturbation brings a whole new aspect to one's intimate relationship...hehehe
For the record.. I am a married woman.

Sharon.

if your happily married and have a good sex life, then masturbation will also increase. It isn't the same for women as it is for men. it is not sex to us. it is something built in to most of us(97% or so)

Oh yes. masturbation is a life long hobby. Understand that it is no reflection on you, it is not in place of you, if it becomes his preference then it is wrong. We men have a need to j/o for release of tensions and frustration, don't nag about it and try to understand that need.
