there is this think layer of yellow substance (it is like another layer of skin) on top of my wound. i try to tear it, but it seems to be glued to my wound/flesh beneath. and i noticed some big red pore-like pimples in some areas where the yellow substance has flaked off. it has been 2 weeks and no noticeable changes. i try duoderm gel on it, and the gel oftens turns yellow at the end of the day, seems like it is able to absorb it. but the thick yellow layer is still there. what is this thing forming on my wound? do i have to remove it somehow as it seems like stopping my wound from healing.

you have an infected wound. The pus must be removed by thorough cleaning. I suggest you go to the ER or out patient clinic. you might also need to take oral antibiotics. Have it seen by a doctor or nurse. 2 weeks is a long time for a wound to not improve.

As a general rule, pus is white because it is formed by dead white blood cells and bacteria bodies. It can sometimes look yellowish as it dries, but more than likely what you are seeing is simply a wet scab. The red pore like things you see under it probably are just that, pores- which look reddish when the usual skin cover gets removed and you see the reddish color of the capillary blood supply nearby. The duoderm gel does turn yellowish as it ages, that's normal. So is that layer underneath- it's healing skin. The best thing you could do is let the poor thing be and quit messing with it. Put a nice dry bandage on it, with at best a thin coat of an antibacterial ointment like Bacitracin. The skin will tend to lose the yellowish color when it all dries out and the skin rehardens, and the true scab is allowed to form. It will likely turn yellowish white again if you take a shower or bath, but will reharden as it dries. Don't pry it off any, just let it wear off and fall off when it's ready- and that will be when the skin underneath is fully healed. There will not be a noticeable change in things until you quit messing with it. If in this process it happens to ooze pus- a white discharge, or if the area becomes warm or tender, then you actually do have an infection and should seek professional help. But otherwise, you can simply bandage it and leave it be. Your body is quite able to heal up on it's own, and probably doesn't appreciate you meddling with the process.
