The two forces are:-
1) Gravitational force (not of much significance as it is very weak in comparison to the electromagnetic repulsion about 10^39 times weaker)
2) Nuclear forces which are the strongest short range forces in nature. We do not know much about them. Their mode of working and quantities they depend upon is not much known. But it is known it is spin dependent and is independent of charge on a body and comes into effect only when separation between bodies is less than 10^-15 m.

In the orbital model of an atom the repulsive component comes from the electrostatic repulsion between the two core protons, while the attractive component rises from the shell, which being negatively charged is attracted by the two protons core and since shared by both it acts hence as a link. However, the shell cohesive energy is not purely electrostatic but is instead mainly fixed by its quantum state.

The force between charged particles is given by coulomb's law. F = kq1q2/r^2 So, the repulsive force between two atoms that are far away is proportional to the product of the number of protons each contains.
