I have reserrected an old computer (4 years ols) by having more memory and XP put on.

The PC previously had AVG on (via dial up) and when connected to Bband I thought it would automatically update. However the version is out of date and not supported. I cannot remove it for some reason although I have done this via control panel (add/remove progs) nor can I download a fresh version as it keeps taking me back to the old registration page with the old number. Anyway it just will not up date. So I put avast on and ran it. This told me I have Win32. I ran PC doctor and this told me something else. What can I believe. How can I clean the machine and be sure it is clean.

Access to internet is limited on this machine but I do have access via another machine. Is there something I can do whilst off line? Can I load something onto a disc maybe, from the one machine and run it on the infected one?

If I buy, say, norton, will that detect and clean and protect in future.

I would do a free online scan at the link below.

This link (program) is reliable.

AVG is not a very good AV program therefore when it was running it would of missed a lot of viruses.

As for removing the old AVG try downloading & using a program like Hijackthis.

If your looking for a good AV program for the future, the best free one at the moment is the AOL one which is Kaspersky & if you wish to pay for the best then Nod32 is the answer.

This is apparently a worm variant that is packed with spyware and a trojan as a backdoor threat and picked up browsing past a malicious content website. You need to have paid subscription antivirus and antispyware with shileds installed and a firewall to avoid these infections.

You most likely need to reboot into Safe Mode and do a full scan with your antivirus program after you have the latest updates installed. Never turn off your antivirus or automatic updates, never. This can reload and reload. This is why it is neccessary to reboot into Safe Mode that stops all the running processes enabling you to quarantine and delete the threat.

For all inforamtion go to www.Google.com and type in " Win32Update.exe " and you will see exactly the threat you are dealing with.

Install antispyware. Note that free antivirus and free antispyware programs do not have real time protection. Only the paid subscritpion service activated it. This blocks threats in real time rather than having to scan after infected in practically all cases. The free Microsft Windows Defender has real time active shields - and is the only free one that does, though it is lackluster in detections. The best antispyware with active real time shields are Trend Micro Antispyware and industry leader Webroot Spysweeper. Only the top sellers in antispyware have real time active shileds which will block drive by installations from bad websites. They do a lot more. Take a look at this screenshot showing shields:

The only program I found that eliminated Win32 was a free program from CNET.com called Antivira AntiVir. It is in the download section of the cnet page. Takes about 1/2 hour to run and can be kept to be updated and auto run daily. Good Luck.
